The playoff system has made the other bowl games irrelevant, or at least not important enough for a NFL prospect to risk injury.

It isn't the playoff system. Its about all the money that pro athletes can now make combined andwith the modern lack of "team loyalty" by coaches, ADs, and players driven by...money. The NFL minimum salary is now over $700K per year and potentially tens of millions in singing bonuses. Coaches will recruit a player then jump ship for the next big paying high prestige job leaving a mess in his wake. Players can bounce in and out of the transfer portal searching for more playing time, more NIL money, more recruiting visibility, etc. ADs allow coaching staffs to pull kids from the portal and crap on a player who has ground his ass off for years trying to finally earn playing time. College football is broken and the playoff is the least of the problem. Look what just happened to the PAC 12? Greed for the almighty dollar.

 

Agree. I’m a boomer who will just continue to remember the good old days (which fortunately coincides with when my team was a powerhouse). I think I’ll just stick to watching the NFL. At least there was never an illusion that the pros were not all about money.

 

When I was younger I used to hate the nfl for that reason. Now that college has become the money hungry awful crap it is now I prefer nfl. At least when the players get paid they have to stay where they are

 

Yep. That days of football players learning and singing their college fight song have been gone for decades.

 

All I’ve seen from the media is how the FSU game proved they didn’t belong in the playoff.

That’s simply not true. The only thing it proved was that the committee got it wrong. Either Georgia was a top 4 team, or FSU wasn’t a top 10 team. You can absolutely say FSU was so bad because of the opt outs, and the opt outs are partially the committees fault, but you cannot say the game proved FSU didn’t belong without also saying it proved the committee wrong.

I hate the NIL, the transfer portal, the playoff “committee”, and everything college football has become lately. The 12 team playoff will fix it a tiny amount, but you’ll still have opt outs and meaningless games, and you’ll still have so many transfers and money chasers. Can’t blame the kids, can only blame the NCAA

 

Remember when college was at least partially about getting an education? At least a little bit?
