I just bought a new white TRD Sport with 6' bed after comparing different trucks for a few years - I picked it up Dec 30, 2023. Although I did some off-roading as a kid, my main reason to buy this truck is to haul my 4,000# boat across the country to various races. While I like the Tacoma's style, I chose a Toyota for miles 120k and above - when other trucks/cars start to fall apart due to age, I'm hoping my well-maintained, garage-kept Toyota will last over 200k miles; I'm planning on it outlasting me - I'm 61.
I am selling a pretty good little VW Sportwagon TDI that was fun to drive and hauled most of what I needed back and forth to the boat. The gas mileage was 45 mpg on the road and 40ish in town, and the turbo made it quick for a silly little wagon. Except when the turbo disintegrated last September, spraying the engine with steel and destroying both. Lucky for me, VW paid for a new engine and turbo. Phew!
This is all to state the obvious for me: I would never buy a 2024 Tacoma with a turbo. It sounds like it outperforms my 2023 in power and fuel economy - today - that's great, good on Toyota. But what happens at 150,000 miles? Does anybody really want to own a turbo-charged truck with 150,000 miles on it? Do you want to try to pull 4000# with a tired turbo? Not me.
I'm sticking to the tried and true - normally aspirated 3.5 V6, the dated plastic dash, and the funny seating position (I'm 5'-7" so I love it). You can keep the power tailgate (how much will that motor cost to replace?) and the larger video screen (can't see the deer on the side of the road). I bought my truck in the nick of time.
Besides, I think the Gen 3 Tacoma has a distinctive look that the Gen 4 loses to the scalpel - must everything have chiseled lines these days.
I'm sure I am in the minority here (my kids roll their eyes when I talk these days), and I hope everybody enjoys your new 2024 truck - congrats to you! Truly. I'll stick to the outdated plastic, the proven motor, and the distinctive lines.
Thanks for letting the old guy talk about his new truck - I feel like a kid with a new toy.
    Best,
    Chris
