I don’t purport to know Michigan laws that well, but I think this is a desperation ploy by legal counsel. Sue everyone, let the judge throw it out. I can’t see where the vehicle owner has liability here.

I remember reading about this when the story came out and it does seem like either a tragic mistake by the tech driving the Jeep or an irresponsible/negligent decision by management if the guy didn't know what he was doing in the first place. It didn't make much sense at first but I think suing the vehicle owner's insurance company was the only option the employee's family had to try getting some sort of funds for funeral expenses, dependents, etc. This article still doesn't go into great detail but does a little better job of explaining why it's being handled the way it is:

I would insist on this only because I can't stand hearing the shop guy rev it up to 4k rpms with the clutch still in trying to get the truck to move. A clutch job isn't fun to do or cheap to have done. I'll burn up my own clutch thank you very much.

This is ridiculous. Make one law to cover bosses negligence. However just use another law to make the dealership responsible.

sometimes I wonder how this country even operates.

Holy crap I just got tires at a place and the kid had to go get his boss because he couldn't drive a manual. There is no logic here, you take your vehicle for service and get sued? Nah, zero sense.

Someone needs to track this story. The family should be ashamed of themselves, suing for 15mil. That's disgusting. Aside from that, someone needs to change michigan law. Or a lawyer needs to come up with some type of waiver for situations like this.

not sure what someone running over their coworker has to do with anyone else other than the person who ran over their coworker

Article says lubie who ran over co worker had no license nor manual driving ability

in a dealer whose definition is driving, license, and manual
sounds Like fault on said driver and dealer for hiring decision

guess it makes sense why dealer paid. So that’s where the labor and parts markup profit went
