Quiet High Clearance Exhaust Recommendations

I’m looking for recommendations on a high clearance exhaust system for my 3rd gen. I’m currently running the R4T exhaust and the noise on the interstate is driving me nuts.

You can tweak a stock exhaust or use a trd exhaust and cut it by the spare tire right after it turns down. If you’re slamming on rocks or debris that comes up past the frame rails you need to do more than raise the exhaust.

 

Quiet, I'd buy an OEM off a junk truck and cut the tip off.

 

Thank you for the replies. It sounds like stock, but cut is the way to go. I’m now scouring junkyards.

 

Ram 1500 single exhaust flows well enough for 400hp and is very quiet. I just never put on anything after the muffler. This is on a 4.0 mind you but price is free at most exhaust shops since everyone with a v8 wants a louder system.

 

cutting the tip off for free does not change sound.

 

I just saw a post about adding a resonator to reduce the sound. Anyone have any experience there?

 

I know Dirty Deeds Exhausts are the shit for Tundras. Keith is an exhaust guru and a good guy, he'll answer your questions even if you're not buying from him. I can't sing his praises enough. I'm sure he can get you pointed the right direction.

 

I've listened to someone's Tacoma that was running the MBRP high exit exhaust. Sounded pretty quiet and he said it doesn't have that "drone" sound inside. Do to being rear-ended over 3 months ago, my truck is still in the shop being repaired, and I'm having a MBRP high exit on mine. They are less expensive than OEM, if you would chop one. I spoke to R4T before decided on MBRP (main concern loudness) and they told me definitely there exhaust was definitely the loudest, as well as compared to others as well. Vibrant 1141 I believe is known as good for that. That's what I got added to OEM TRD catback exhaust (2nd gen). And cut the tip off, paying attention to not cut it too short or anything.
Still wanted to retain:
-not directing heat at leafpack bushings
-not directing heat at spare tire
-still directing heat somewhat down and away, to avoid it going to the cabin or window

TRD catback had highway drone that went away after putting the Vibrant which was designed to resolve that.

I don't know what MBRP is like. I hear they're loud and drone.
I like how they look, and would want one. For the nice downturn tip.
But not when it means noise, drone, and paying twice more than what a TRD catback is for likely zero difference in clearance functionality.

Toyota V6's, and V6's in general, don't sound fantastic.
Only goal was to cheaply change noise from None, to Some
so I could have an idea of what's going on with the engine (manual)
as in stock form, you couldn't tell if the engine was even on.

MBRP in the nicer anti corrosion looks nice
And it would be new, so not rusted
But hard pass if it means fartcan noise and drone…

technically an exhaust shop could probably remake my current setup straight at the end and weld on a turndown tip, that wouldn’t change noise given retaining the Vibrant and TRD muffler

I don’t know if there’s a design purpose for the “elbow” curve of stock pipe over the axle. If that’s simply a path to clear the axle, or if it works to trap air and help prevent water getting in during a crossing.

 

I found myself in the same predicament, as off road at crawling speed any high idol noise just drives me batty.

I was worried about some strange harmonics, or extra noise when cutting the OEM exhaust, as I had a stock Off-road exhaust with a TRD tip.

I ended up just going for it and cutting the exhaust off above the leafs.
Zero extra noise, and zero harmonics.
Worked a treat, and no cost to me, and clears all the suspension nicely.

 

What is the definition of “high clearance exhaust”?

If you are trying limit damage to your exhaust, there are many threads about exhaust reroutes to eliminate the part of the exhaust that hangs below the frame cross member under the tranny/diff. There are also many threads about chopping the exhaust after the rear axle to avoid the tail pipe from being crushed.

Neither mod has any effect on acoustics that I know of.

My personal experience is that I have left my exhaust stock and it has not been damaged nor gotten me hung up. YMNV.

 

It does if he goes with a stock exhaust and gets rid of the loud ass exhaust he has. Just checked on a ram exhaust like mentioned and it will work.A lot of people on here give away their stock exhaust or charge next to nothing. I got one in Alaska when I tore mine up for 30 bucks.

 

Been through many exhausts on American cars. Always trying to get the perfect sound. Closest I came was reduced flow cats, flowmaster large case, and resonators. Smaller diameter pipe helped. But it was always very tricky to not have drone. Almost impossible. Vibrant resonators are great but they may not reduce drone as much as you want.

in the end on the Tacoma the TRD exhaust is near perfect but expensive. Compared to doing exhaust work 2-4 times to get it right though it’s a bargain. For high clearance all you really need is a reroute.
