I'm thinking of retroactively adding in Blind Spot Monitoring to my 2020 Tacoma, will the OEM sensors, provided I mount them correctly work with an aftermarket control module?

(Not certain if BSM sensors are plug and play and operate on a simple premise or if sensors are controller apecifi or require calibration, etc.

Stay with the aftermarket sensors and module. I do not believe the OEM would mix, but that would be a question for the aftermarket manufacturer. Since the aftermarket manufacturer is in the business of selling the complete kit I do not know why one would make the OEM sensors compatible with their system.

My reasoning is the mounting location on the very very few off-road bumpers that support BSD seem very specificl sized to the exact size of the OEM ones and I may or may not be able to fabricate something assuming the aftermarket sensors are physically smaller.

I really miss the sensor as it's useful to know if someone is next to me at glance if someone is next to me (even though I still check mirror and over shoulder before changing lanes)

To possibly help in your endeavor here is a schematic. The system seems to be mostly self-contained with the only connection to the other modules in the vehicle being the CAN bus. The buzzer, indicators, etc. all are fed by the two BSM modules. I do not know what would happen if you were to sever the BSM CAN from the rest of the vehicle.

The mirror indicators expect ~9 VDC from the BSM modules, not 12VDC. On my stock mirrors I was testing them off of the vehicle and applied 12VDC to one and let's just say it no longer works. Plus, I have since measured the on-vehicle indicator voltage to confirm.

The modules are identical from right to left. How they are wired determines their function.

    OEM BSM/CTA retrofit complete
BSM w/CTA OEM retrofit in 3rd Gen Tacoma SR5 | Tacoma World

OEM BSM retrofit for SR5 and up requires two sensors, two BSM indicators, dash switch, CTA buzzer and wiring harness.
Bumper mounted sensors are the control modules. I used aftermarket mirrors with direction signals, but simple LEDs could be used to save cost.

It should be noted that the BSM wiring diagram shows a single pair of CAN. It is actually two twisted pairs to form a loop from engine compartment junction box to the master BSM module.

Good call on the 9V to indicator LED. Likely save someone else the trouble.
