4 hours + (7:15-11:30) NOTHING but 18,673 1/2 squirrels!!!! Black, gray, dark gray (black x grey cross) and fox squirrels...no reds tho. Not a single deer or turkey. Finally heard a couple distant shots well after 10AM. Cold once the wind started kicking up and no snow to speak of at this time. Feet were warm once I turned on my Thermacell inserts to medium - worked great!!! Will see what tomorrow brings. Father-in-law tried to talk me into coming back this afternoon, but once I get out of my gear and warmed up inside (and have a beer or 2 - don't tell anybody:cheers:) it is REALLY tough to go back out!!! Gotta put all the Xmas decorations away once the wifey gets home anyway.

Ya know, if I can get me a buck with my flintlock, I may just call it a career after 55 years of deer hunting. Have killed bucks with a: compound bow, crossbow, rifle, pistol, and shotgun but never with a muzzleloader - neither inline nor flintlock. So, every weapon used but muzzleloader.

Ahhhhhhhh, the beer is tasting good!!!!!

May even have a third or possibly a fourth as the wifey still isn't home (and I can't get yelled at now).

Up until a few years ago when Indiana allowed HP rifle all I used during gun season was a muzzleloader. Much more accurate than shotgun and if you aren't one inclined to blaze away the one shot thing shouldn't bother you. In fact I would hunt the bow season and the first weekend of gun then I would take a break until MZ season. The deer have had a little break to calm down, after the first weekend no more hunters, deer are usually more active because of the cold weather, secondary rut going on, chance to hunt in the snow..... I love me some muzzleloading season.

Exactly my style, I only bow hunted for many years then when kids were small I’d take one along & whack a doe with rifle, about 6 years ago I had a slow season & needed some salami meat so late December I borrowed a MZ & got a 5 minute lesson on how to load ect. I took 2 deer my first sit with that thing & following season I bought one exactly like I’d borrowed. Totally in love with it now & always look forward to hunting with it.

I am done for the year.....

Got a later start (not by much, no flashlight needed) and again saw ZERO deer. Heard 1 shot, closer than yesterday's 2 shots, but nothing showed after watching that general direction for 20 minutes. Saw probably double the number of squirrels as yesterday - at one point, without moving my eyes or head one bit, I watched 8 of them together!!!! Never saw anything like that in my life. Part of my amazement is, this is not a dominant oak, hickory, or beech woods I am hunting. A few scattered larger trees and some 10-16" trees, but mostly maple and cherry and one neighbor's woods was clearcut about 8 years ago, so NO big trees of any species.

Good luck to the rest of you guys still at it!!!

2 more days of muzzleloader to go and archery is in till at least the end of January. At least I had my chance twice (bow & pistol) so I am content.

Cheers to another season in the books!! Hopefully many opportunities present themselves in fall of 24 & if they don’t I crunched #s 297 squirrels = 1 deer:)
