Is Henderson NV (close to Paradise Hills) a good place to live?

Currently in PHX but just visited Death Valley. Not keen on needing to drive 5 hours just to get to Las Vegas area. Wondering if being only 2 hours from DV is worth relocating.

My apartment lease expires in 5 weeks so can assume a house lease (room needed to add camping options).

I have a family member that lives in Henderson and loves it, and they hate the strip and all things touristy. We visit them at least twice a year and I absolutely hate the Vegas valley. The traffic is crazy and dangerous. When you drive on the freeway there are skid marks on the jersey barriers every hundred feet. It's hot AF in the summer (but being from Phoenix it will probably feel cool) and smoggy year round. They don't have state income taxes, but property taxes and car registration fees are high. In the end the taxes and fees are about the same as I pay in Utah.

I've been the Phoenix 20+ times and Henderson more times than I can remember and if I had to choose I'd go with Phoenix. But, it sounds like you're pretty mobile so why not give it a try. My sister in-law does love it.

Thanks for that input. Yeah ... they get you in the end, be it taxes or life-related fees. The strip (what little I have seen of it) seems glaringly bright and sad/pathetic. PHX has a dozen casinos within an hours of my current apartment where you can lose your life savings money as fast as the strip.

If not for the 5-hour drive (I am older and do not enjoy long drives like younger folk) just to reach Vegas I would not consider the move.

If you're into exploring the desert Pahrump is a lot closer to DV and the rest of the deserts. It used to be that whenever I visited Henderson my brother in-law and I would escape the wives by going shooting in the desert. It's was taking so long to get away from the subdivisions that we've started going to indoor ranges. (not near as much fun IMHO) I've taken my Tacoma on a lot of the back roads and desert trails around eastern and southern Nevada and Pahrump would be a better home base. That said, I've only been to Pahrump once, while driving through to Henderson, so I have no opinion on its livability. As for the strip glaringly bright and sad/pathetic is a perfect description. My wife used to like to gamble and would drag me down there to, I don't know watch stupid people that can't do math give their money to the casino? There used to be some good deals on restaurants, but since covid I've only ever driven past that mess on the way to the in-laws.

Pahrump is closer. Drove through Vegas/Pahrump when I drove to see the temporary lake, powered through and only saw the cities late-night. I had previously tried to make DV but did not want to push the last 2 hours so stopped long enough to see the strip in Vegas. Maybe I should have continued to DV but did not then.

I have a 3-day weekend coming up due to MLK so maybe ...
