How intense is the Sand Dam run? My friend says one needs 400+ hp to approach sand dam 2wd. So If I will sit out sand dam should I find something else to do? So I am asking about the run up to the 78 ocotillo from the hypothetical perspective of something more mild for 2wd action. Maybe I will just come in huff - wheeler and focus on drinking tequila, then sunday I can drive home north thru the desert with a group. I haven't driven out here I don't know the route or conditions exactly.

Tell me what you are interested in, I have a chance to prerun 78 - superstition the prior weekend but it would be a long ways for my camp :smash:

My locked 2wd could get to Sand Dam and back out via the bypass. To get up Sand Dam proper is another story…. But that’s what the bypass is for. No need for crazy Glamis style V8 buggies.

why did I take the Volt? Because I couldn’t make Super that year and some friends decided to go again a few months later. I had sold the Tacoma and didn’t have any other vehicle at the time. Made do with what I had!

I forgot all about that... Man talk about digging up old skeletons.

I actually ran into Mateo a couple weeks ago at Cougar Buttes. Watched him get reallll tippy
Not that bad. Sand Dam has a pretty decent climb to get up onto it before you drop into the dam. If you can make it up there you can exit the bypass no problem. And even if you couldn't make it for some reason, there's usually a 4wd around that would be happy to pull you

I would not come down from the 78. Take Huff to Wheeler. That trail from the 78 (Split Mtn) is super silty right now and is not safe for you to be attempting alone. I was there last weekend with my friend Dan who has a locked Tundra, he took one of the left tracks and got stuck in the NASTIEST silt I've ever seen. Even my truck didn't like it, trust me, you want no part of that

I used to make it up sand dam before the cab cage. I can only make it 3/4 way after all the weight added. Maybe if I go down to 10 psi I can make it happen.

You can still make it. Its not about the truck, its about the conditions. When we went for New Years I was able to make it up no problem Friday night, Saturday night I couldn't make it up no matter how hard I try

There was a lot of wind Saturday which probably softened everything up. There was also a shit load of people there all day going up and down just spinning tire the whole way. I was able to make it up 95% of the way on my last, hardest attempt but I sank in a hole dug by an old 60's Suburban on 40's that was stuck in 2wd
