I have what I initially thought was a (too) simple question about a replacment clutch for the W59 transmission in my 2000 Tacoma 2WD 2.4 L 2RZ-FE. I have not been able to find anything that answers my question with certainty.

Note: both AISIN and LUK made the clutches that were being installed in the Tacomas made during the period of time my Tacoma was made 03/2000.

    QUESTION

Both the clutch cover and the friction disc that came out of my truck were made by LUK. I have been unable to determine who made the flywheel. My question is: Does having a LUK clutch cover installed mean that I SHOULD use a replacement LUK clutch cover (i.e., one specified in my Tacoma's Toyota parts diagram, which lists substitute Toyota part numbers).

My Tacoma's parts diagram substitutions for the clutch cover goes down two different pathways, depending on what part number is actually installed: LUK or AISIN.

See https://yoshiparts.com/ using the VIN: 4TANL42N8YZ656298, and go to the "Clutch and Release Fork" exploded parts diagram.

BTW: RockAuto offers up about a dozen clutch covers, made by several different manufacturers, that RockAuto suggests fit my vehicle. I am guessing that clutch covers made by any of those manufacturers that are not LUK or AISIN are considered aftermarket (non-OEM) products, and even LUK or AISIN covers whose part numbers are not identical to some Toyota specified substitute part number would also be considered aftermarket. RockAuto supposedly sells those aftermarket clutch parts, and people buy and use them, which suggests that alternate manufacturers can make clutch parts that will work in the vehicle, but who knows how well.
