I "left" TW back in 2020 when I bought an F150.
I had a well put together 2005 crew cab that I sold to subsidize my F150 build.
I've missed that truck a bunch.
Last month my wife bought a 2010 Regular cab, 2TR-FE, 5spd, with 79k miles.
It was lifted, but not in a good way.
It had heavy tires, heavy ARB bumper, heavy suspension, etc etc
It rode and drove like crap. The 2.7L could barely get off the line with all the weight.
At 79k miles, the service records indicated the only maintenance done was oil changes.
    So it was time to get to work;
    • Since then I've swapped all the fluids, belts, hoses, filters.
    • Cleaned or replaced most of the sensors.
    • New spark plugs.
    • Found a set of stock alloy wheels and wrapped them with P rated all terrain tires.
    • Traded bumpers with a kid who wanted my ARB and had a black plastic bumper with fog lights installed.
    • And replaced the suspension with KYB OEM replacements and 3+1 rear leafs.
I forgot how much fun / how easy these things are are work on!
It rides and drives like a dream now!
I think all that weight and poor maintenance did something to the transmission though. That's a little above my paygrade so I'm getting it looked at soon.
Other than that I might look into the bucket seat swap. If my wife is driving, my knees are in my chin! :D
Good to be back. This'll be a fun daily driver for me and my wife, and eventually my son in a coupla years.

    Hard to explain.
At a cruising speed, when you let off the gas, it makes a noise.
At higher speeds, if you take it out of gear (clutch pedal in or out) it makes the same noise.
What the noise sounds like is the complicated part. I think it's a bad bearing somewhere.
There is also a noise when slowing down that sounds like a bad wheel bearing but it's not, so I think it's a bearing somewhere else.
I scoped it and all the noise I hear is coming from either the xmission or near the driveshaft.

What a great find! I love those simple reliable older trucks. My hunch is the problem is in the rear of the drive shaft.

There were some TSB's for manual transmissions on some 5spd 2nd gen Tacomas.

I have a 2007 5 speed, and never had these issues. However, I did replace the clutch at 190k, and decided to have, the slave and master cylinders replaced, as a precaution, with the updated oem versions.

Good luck. Have fun with this truck.

There are many old threads on Tacomaworld on these TSB's, here's one.

Good lookin' truck. I have an 09 Regular Cab myself. After months of looking for bucket seats, I finally found some 3rd gen buckets that bolted right in. You will have to take the wiring harness, seatbelts, sensors and passenger occupancy bladder out of the bench and swap it over to the buckets. It's not really a difficult job, just be patient and take your time. The harness is one piece so you'll have to run some wires under the carpet for a clean look. 3rd gen buckets with some SeatJacker clones have increased comfort levels tremendously.

    Nice regular cab!

I wouldn't swap the bladder over from the OEM bench to buckets. There are other ways to get this done without ever cannibalizing the OEM bench seat.

Sounds like possibly the trans input shaft bearing or possibly the pilot bearing. Neither typically requires taking the trans apart, just the front cover

    Private sale.
    She paid too much, $18k.
If it had been in better driving condition it might have been worth it.
It is what it is now.
It's been fun to work on, even if it is taking a few thousands bucks to get it back into shape.

    That's what I'm hoping.
I don't think the u-joints on these are grease-able, but if they are I'll pump some new grease in those as well. Can't hurt.

The noise was a lack of lubrication from the u-joints and the splines at either end of the driveshaft.

Everything got a proper greasing and it runs like it’s new!
