What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

I kept mine inline. Usually never gets about 180 unless doing specific stuff or it's really hot out.

 

I had mine inline for a while but I think I had a small internal leak. Started getting an oily substance in my rad overflow. Haven’t had that since I bypassed

 

Just like the stock housing, I filled mine to the aftermarket fill hole (*Note* not the inspection hole if you got one of those). Make sure you have a nice clean breather and it'll puke out any you don't need. I have two sets of rear axles seals installed and not a drip has every pushed out doing this.

That's with seals to keep all the oil in the diff? (No oil in the shaft section of the housing)

That's based on Diamond housing. Doubt it's much of a difference with RS. Call and ask RS to see what they recommend.

 

Same as @ToyRyd04. Filled from the inspection port until it started coming out of the standard fill plug. But looks like you don't have one of those so I'd call and ask as suggested. Or go based on judgement, like halfway up the third member or so

 

Oil typically only goes up about halfway in one of these anyway. You can get really close by just leaving one of your drive flanges off and it'll run out the axle hole when it's full.

 

It's full float with seals to keep the oil in the diff.

Ah didn't realize you did Toyota style FF with bearings packed in grease. I leave that inner seal off on my LC and let the gear oil lube the wheel bearings too.

I had always thought that with modern A/Ts the OD was with the torque converter locked up and when out of OD you were spinning the converter and putting energy into the fluid within it creating more heat?

when I did my flush and fill of the transmission fluid I did double check the fluid level on the stick when hot and confirmed all was in spec.

My cooler is about 7.5” x 10.5” and when I installed it after my flush and fill I again checked and added a little fluid to bring things into spec for the added cooler fluid volume.

I do have an OBDII scan tool that talks to my android head unit and I should have checked on whether the Torque app or other OBDII scan app would read transmission temperature.

BTW, the engine did not consume any oil during the towing trip.

An a340 only locks the torque converter in third or fourth gear. The issue is when you're giving it gas hard to stay in overdrive it often unlocks the torque converter rather than dropping down to 3rd with the torque converter locked so you'll end up generating more heat in overdrive than if you just stayed in third gear and let it lock the torque converter.

So if your in full torque lock with the OD on, you're fine, but it usually does a small downshift, typically for me this is from 2000-2100 rpm to about 2400rpmish. When that happens you're slipping. If you take OD off, it'll fully downshift, slip a bit and then lock up.

You just need to disable OD more frequently and having a good way to monitor the temp will help you know when to do that.

And a sigh of relief... the axle shafts are exactly the right fit. Never measured custom axles before. Dutchman axles really took the time to go over everything, to make sure they were right. CAN NOT recommend them enough.

 

So if I understand correctly, the better play when heavy towing would be to disengage OD via the shifter button as opposed to letting the machine select the conditions for a downshift?

My downshifts out of OD by the transmission went to roughly 3,000rpm from about 2,200rpm.

Correct, the torque converter will only lock up in 3rd gear if OD is turned off as well. Your best bet for towing, especially a heavy load or when going up hill, is to turn OD off and keep your speed at a reasonable level. Much easier on the transmission.
If you cooked your ATF on the last trip (i.e. the ATF temp light came on), I would recommend doing a drain and fill in the near future and then another in a month or so.
