Totally agree with you about the smart key issue. It shouldn't run if the fun isn't within range, Toyota tells me that's so it doesn't shut down on you while driving if your fob battery goes dead. I told them that it's works more like a dumb key, I can leave my fob at home & drive across the country as long as I never shut it off.

Not always the best idea, I'm 6'4 and even when I lean over to try to scrape ice off the window I'm worried a zipper or button will scratch the paint or I end up covered in salt from the truck afterwards.

Another thing you can do is put your Truck on defrost and put the visors down. That helps getting the air on the windshield.

You can use your emergency key to lock the truck after starting it to allow it to warm up. I do this all the time in the summer to keep the AC running for my doggo.

    Hello.
Did the roll down window, exit, shut door, reach in window, lock doors on door button, roll up window via one touch auto up while removing arm quick. Kept running and doors locked. 2017 OR

My Nissan Altima allows me to lock the doors with fob in my pocket, engine running. Not sure why Toyota doesn't do the same thing. It's nice to be able to walk inside a convenience store with the heat still going in the car.

I bought a 2017 Tacoma yesterday and this was one of the things I asked the dealer about. He seemed surprised when I said my Altima can lock the doors with engine running. I was really hoping there was a way to achieve this on the Tacoma. Guess not. I'll just freeze my butt off I guess. First world problems, but still, seems like an easy fix by Toyota.

Make sure you have the physical door key in your pocket. Roll down drivers window. Leave truck running. Get out and shut door. Reach in open window and hit lock all doors button. Then pull up on driver window to activate auto roll up. Pull arm out before window rolls up. Make sure fob not in vehicle. It will beep at you when u walk away because it wants to be smarter than you.
To unlock you must use the door key. Fob will not work....

I know this is an old post but after my son locking himself out of a running truck at -43C I thought I would clarify:
    - 2017 Tacoma with keyless ignition fob
    - vehicle running
    - gets out WITH complete fob, no fob left in vehicle
    - before closing driver's door, presses door handle doorlock button
    - wasn't sure he heard the locks activate and we have touch unlock so checking the handle would have just unlocked it
    - SOoooooo, presses lock on fob and hears it either lock or relock (maybe you have to do both door handle lock followed by relock from button on fob to make this work but he DID NOT use the metal key to lock the door)
    - comes back to truck and touch unlock from fob DISABLED, and the fob unlock button DISABLED. Fob lights up and is working, but truck won't recognize it.
    - funny part was I had washed the truck a week ago and the lock was frozen so when key wouldn't turn he panicked. Ultimately, wiggling the key for a few minutes worked the ice loose, unlocked with metal key and good to go

The answer to the why of why it won't recognize the fob is so that your fob can't be cloned on the idling truck. Thieves could hang out in parking lots and watch you get out and lock your running truck. Then they just walk around near you and clone your key. Then they walk back to your vehicle before you do and take off. By disabling the truck's ability to be unlocked by the fob and requiring the metal key in this scenario is preventing key cloning theft.
