Damn, the coldest I’ve had to deal with was-20ish, that was the time I was asked if I wanted to plug in. I wished I could have, the truck did not want to start or move. Be careful!!

after a certain point it all feels the same. everything hurts - hurts to breathe, eyes freeze, snot freezes, skin stings even without any wind adding to the cold.
haven't left the house all day - not even to check the mail 20 feet out the door

Good friend of mine lives in Silver Bay, North of Two Harbors. We talk at least once a week more the last 2 as his 2023 Tacoma has saggy pants and he is replacing the springs with custom ones. He retired as an electrician from Cliffs Co. where they process iron ore and load the boats. Don't care if they call it taconite it is still iron ore from the Mn. Iron Range LOL. Although Silver Bay was built around taconite and Rocky Taconite is the center of the town of 1800 people.

All the ore is transported by train and the employees are Railroad workers even at the Cliffs plant which is a whole different government retirement plan. Some of it good, some bad.

Two harbors loading dock is hard to see with the Cliffs plant and security. A guy regularly flies drones to take pictures. This was last week, yeah normally iced out by now. 26 tons vs. 76 tons.

    upload_2024-1-13_18-5-12.jpg

Think you watch the dock camera in Duluth so likely seen this a day or 2 ago. Sea Smoke rolling in on the The Manitoulin anchored in Duluth

    upload_2024-1-13_18-7-5.jpg

Pretty much but it is mind over matter. It don't matter if you don't mind LOL. -32° in February from the back of a dog sled. Center of the Lake ahead (Gunflint Lake) North is Canada. I was young then, only 55 cold didn't hurt my bones so much then

But love the Gunflint Trail and spend most of my time up and down the Trail that I can.

There are some great camping spots in the UP that you can watch the freighters go by. Coming from or going to Duluth on Superior

When it gets to -20 is when the fun stuff starts.
    1. Blow bubbles. They freeze in the air and fall to the ground vs floating. If you have a smooth surface you can keep them from cracking and have a frozen bubble. Will also freeze on the wand if you go slow.
    2. Hammer nails with Bananas. Leave the banana out overnight. In the morning if you're careful and have soft wood you can pound a nail in. Other times the banana will just shatter.
    3. Frozen orange treats. Leave the orange out overnight and suck on the orange ice cube
    4. Watch water instantly vaporize. Throw warm water in the air and it turns to what looks like steam instantly.
    5. Triple dog dare your enemy to lick a metal surface. NEVER do this to a friend!
    6. Ice marbles. Fill balloons with water and food coloring. Leave outside. After its frozen remove the balloon.
