Honestly, I tried reading the manual and didn't get anywhere. I also tried searching the forum using a spare key and didn't find what I'm looking for.

My question is how to carry a spare key on the outside of the vehicle? Say, I'm fishing miles from civilization and the truck is locked. Now, imagine my phone and keys fall in the deep end of the lake. How do I open the truck and drive home?

I have two smart key fobs, each with a mechanical key. And I have one single mechanical key with a large plastic head. I tried this one and it opens the doors but will not start truck (push button). :notsure:

Remove the battery and strap it tight to somewhere on the vehicle. It can start the truck without the battery. It just cant use proximity. You make a valid point for sure.

You're saying remove battery from fob and strap fob somewhere? So, there's still a chip in it the truck will recognize?

Yup, try it out. The key blade will open the door, and to start the truck you push the smart key against the start button.

It's actually a scenario that most dont think of either. What if the fob battery dies.

    I will...today!
So the large plastic headed mechanical key that does NOT come out of the fob only unlocks doors, nothing else?

seeing your bumper in your avatar, i would get one of those magnetic key boxes, and install it somewhere within reach inside that bumper.

my previous truck had a magnetic key box shoved up in the drivers side fender, on a small ledge just above the bumper-- basically locked the box into the location so it couldn't be jostled out, was always there when i needed it and far enough away from easy access that no one could know where it was.

i don't know what you mean by 'not come out'. the blade key that attaches to the keyring(unless you have an upgraded case) is the mechanical entry backup.

it can also be used to drop the truck into neutral after removing the square plug just in front of the shifter, as well as lock/unlock the tailgate.

Yes, its intended for ease of use on the tail gate oddly enough. You can stow under the arm rest lid if I recall there's a slot to keep it there.

To open the smart key, remove the small blade and use the blade to twist the small rectangle that is exposed when the blade is removed.

Okay, key opens door and fob against button started the truck:thumbsup:

But I have "key not detected" warning and a "!" flashing too. It will still drive without shutting off?

Yes will drive as long as needed, it’s worried you started the truck and left it outside the vehicle.

again these are just secondary safe guards, it’s good to see how it all works

Yeah absolutely interesting to see how this works! Thanks for the help and your patience.:hattip:
For me, I think I'll disable/turn off the RF transmission and simply store the spare fob underneath with the battery intact. It will work as normal or, work as it would without the battery if it dies.

Y'all are overthinking this. Put the large mechanical key under the truck somewhere. Turn off the key fob and put it in the cab somewhere. Open door with mechanical key, turn on fob, wallah.

    Edit before asked:
*Hold down on the lock button and then push the unlock button twice. Its now disabled.
    * To enable the key fob just it the unlock button.
