Can anyone help me identify this transmission? Came out of a 2000 Tacoma 2.7l 4x4. I got it for free and was thinking about rebuilding it. I think he said it was slipping real bad going to 2nd gear. How bad would it be to just replace the clutches?

It's an A340F. You'll probably want to do a full rebuild not knowing the condition or age of any of the inside parts.

Thanks. I’m going to try to tackle this myself. Have you ever done a rebuild on one?

Any tricks to it? Or is it pretty plain and simple?

If we use the 1 to 10 scale I consider it a 9 out of 10. There are hundreds of pieces and small parts that need to go back exactly as they're found. Thrust washers that you have to be careful with. Not knowing what was originally wrong I'd be concerned about a valve body issue. I've linked below a starting point for rebuild parts. Once apart you will have to determine what is bad and what can be reused. I'd also price in a new front pump and torque converter. You might also do solenoids. You'll also need a press and large snap ring pliers and an oem manual. When I did mine I video myself take it apart and label everything. As a toyota Tech probably one of the most complex things I have ever done. Besides doing your pressure checks and measurements you'll only know you did it right after you put it in the truck and drive it. If you get it wrong you'll have to pull it back out and figure out whats wrong and what's possibly broken.

I appreciate the info. I’ll just push this one to the side and let someone who knows what they’re doing rebuild it one day

Not to say it's impossible but When you include all new parts the time and hassel and tools then compare it to $2400 I'll just spend the little extra cash to let someone else deal with it. I only did it for my schooling.

I would attempt it if I actually needed the transmission. I have to two gen one Tacomas but both are manuals. This transmission was laying in the bed of a wrecked truck I bought. The guy just told me I could have it because it was slipping. I may try to sell it as is‍♂️

Auto trans are no fun to rebuild especially if they are not special and valuable. It isn't particularly difficult but you need a really clean and large area to rebuild them and often the parts exceed the value of the transmission. And an auto trans in a 1st Gen just sssuuuccckkksss hehe.
