Snow in the Tacoma

First year in the snow for my 2017 sr5 Tacoma 2.7ltr 4x4, I’ve heard and read a lot of comments and post about Tacomas in the snow, and I’ve had nothing but a great experience. In two wheel drive it kinda sucks but 4x4 it handled amazingly!! I tried getting sideways a few times and it wouldn’t unless I punched the throttle super hard and turned as sharp as I could, but all and all it did great in about a foot of snow with street tires.

 

It does fine in snow. Gonna see about ice tmr. Had freezing rain all day yesterday and it froze even more over night. Over an inch of ice in some spots. Been tasked with picking up people for work

 

There is little to no correlation between automobile brand and snow performance. It’s primarily about tires and drive system (rwd < fwd < 4wd < awd)

Have fun. Driving in the snow is one of my favorite pastimes.

your drive system priorities are messed up.

fwd sucks the most. rwd is a riot as long as the cops don't stop you. awd depends on the system utilized .front-biased, or rear-biased, and computer control methodology. 4x4 with locked diffs is the best.

I respectfully disagree. 4x4 with locked diffs is fine if your top speed is 10 mph. At road speeds it interferes with steering without any advantages because awd is all you need to not get stuck on the road

I believe all rally race cars are awd and not 4wd. I’ve owned both rwd, fwd, awd and 4wd cars and think awd is significantly better at high speed snow driving.

rwd might be fun, but it requires special skills to be safe in

You make no sense. Locked transfer cases and diffs fuck with your steering. They don’t help you go faster. They do however help in low speed off road settings.

I’m fairly certain that if I raced myself on a snow covered race track that I would beat my taco with my Subaru. However, I’m fairly certain my taco would win any sort of snow covered rock crawling competition.

 

In the 16+ years I've owned my Tacoma I've not had a decent snow here in GA. But in 2010 I was in Colorado hunting. No pics, but we decided to pack up and leave NW Colorado after lunch. We drove through a pretty decent snow storm after dark. I hit snow a little east of Glenwood Springs and didn't see the pavement again until Denver where we got a room for the night. It did fine.

 

I was hoping a thread like this would come along. I got my 2013 in June and recently we got about 8” of light snow (I’m in the mountains east of Albuquerque) and getting out of the drive it slid alot. It’s got Michelin Defender LTX M/S on it. I had the same tire on my previous truck a 2006 Nissan Nismo and it seemed to do better. Any idea why this might be? Both trucks are double cab short beds.

 

FWD is way better in snow then RWD, absolutely no question about it.
