I'm looking at a 2015. The service records say it was treated for rust in 2021 during the recall. The frame is black with a few rust spots in the corners. Below is what the service record says. Anyone know what this means? Is the frame likely to be okay after the treatment? Thanks.

The frame could have been rusty when they applied the coating. I wouldn’t assume anything now.

    Bad advice.

OP the newest campaign involves cleaning and drying the inside of the frame on a special machine, then spraying a white waxy goo inside the boxed sections before plugs are installed to prevent water ingress.

It’s not at all like the old campaign that coated the outside of the frame with a hard black paint.

My frame was utterly spotless [couple thousand miles on the truck] when I had it done. If it wasn't done, I don't believe they will give you the longer 12 year warranty against rust thru.

They wash it and spray inhibitor inside the frame channels and mounts. It's hard to see.

The procedure that was used is to wash the inside of the boxed section of the frame, dry it, spray white corrosion inhibitor, and plug the factory punched holes in the frame. Doing that extended the frame rust through warranty of 12 years from new.

I had my 2014 inspected, plugs installed and treated before the deadline, and the dealer has re-inspected it twice since, however they do not clean and re-treat with CRC. This is fine with me because I hose down, touch up any rust spots, and spray everything with Fluid-Film in the spring. The CRC they applied has stayed put in the areas it where it was applied.

That is correct. It was a one time treatment.

Maybe a stupid question: what do you have to do get the frame inspected and have the CRC applied? My frame is also spotless, but I figured hey, it can't hurt, I only have until this November to get it done. So I made an appointment at the dealership for it, showed up, and then the service writer was a complete dick, said they'd charge me just to put it on the lift. Needless to say I was pissed they wasted my time.

You need to check your vin against the special warranty enhancement to see if your truck qualifies. Only cold weather regions are part of it.

If you qualify I would print off the paperwork and have it with you when you visit a different dealership.

what is this "special machine" you speak of

    what plugs

    what special warranty enhancement
I wonder if I too qualify for a free expensive frame that would take long to do and get bolts left loose
    -not original owner
-moved to place of snow, ice, and MagCL instead of sand
    -a lot of miles
    -very old

The frame looks good and is covered until 2026. The service manager when I purchased the truck strongly suggested I bring it in annually to have it re-inspected every year and especially just before the deadline for the mandatory inspection in August 2021. (For my 2014) If you missed that date, you were not eligible for the 12 year warranty extension. (From date of first use) They even sent me a reminder that the inspection deadline for the extension was coming up in 45 days. If I'm in there getting other service and it's close to 12 months since the last inspection, they just do it and note the findings on the service write up/report.

The above but after checking and verifying, I'd go above the service writer politely and speak to the branch manager or owner [if possible] and bring it to Toyota's attention. Rudeness has no place when you are in a service related employment spot and laziness [the failure to even check on status boils down to laziness] doesn't either. Toyota pays for all the related frame treatment time/labor and materials.

First line is probably a truncation, maybe "2011-2017 MY CLEAN FRAME..." "MY" being an abbreviation for "model year". This document on the DOT website describes the Campaign K0D work: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2019/MC-10169416-9999.pdf

    upload_2024-1-15_11-11-39.png

It sprays the CRC inside the boxed portion of the frame, similar to the production cavity wax Toyota started spraying in 2018 trucks. This does NOT automatically mean the frame is OK now. It simply shows the frame didn't develop rust holes bigger than 10mm when inspected 3 years ago.
