So you keep a key to your house outside of the house where anyone can find it?

I’d keep a spare key hidden in my truck because there’s nowhere to put it around my current place. Seems easy.

 

No kidding. Sounds more like a nightmare than a dream.

 

I like this. This is a complete non issue for anyone with a plan.

I have 2 separate doors into my house. Both work off of wifi and each has it's own separate battery back up in the lock itself. Both locks also have keyed cylinders for if the batteries are all dead, the wifi is down, or the power is out.

So hide a key outside like it is 1973 and be done with it.

 

There are backup methods with literally every electronic lock. So those 1% scenarios are pretty easily overcome

 

Only because troglodytes keep dreaming up outlandish scenarios that don't exist.

Batteries last for years in the doors. Oh, and when they get low, guess what?
They tell you they are low and give you like 3 months heads up to replace some regular batteries.

 

Also really glad that none of these guys have ever had a regular key break in a lock cylinder, because I have. Guess what bailed me out…

 

This isn't even advanced stuff anymore. Once some of the guys here learn about digital wallets, phone apps that start your truck and contactless payments, it will blow their little minds.

Keycard with built in key is almost primitive by today's standards.

I carry a key fob for my ‘23 Taco. One lone fob all by itself and that’s it. I wish I didn’t have to carry it but i do and it almost never comes out of my pocket. It goes in my pocket in the morning before I leave the house and comes back out of my pocket when i got to bed that night. When i get a 4th gen I’m sure I’ll use the card key primarily.

House has smart locks I can open with keypad code or with my phone. For those fearful of a wifi or battery failure, they all have actual keys too. I keep one hidden in the backyard in a very discreet place nowhere near the house and another in my truck console. I’ve had smart locks for over a decade and I’ve had to use the actual key maybe once ever… can’t even remember but it seems like I once had to. It’s not really all that high tech and mine has been rock solid dependable.

I have a big ass key ring I keep in the truck center console. It has all the other random keys I might ever need. House, mailbox, camper shell, parents house, house gun safe key (it’s a backup and is unlabeled, safe has keypad), and whatever other random keys for the toys I have.

Wallet system is similar. Phone case carries my DL, debit, and one CC. All other random cards I have in my life stay in a separate wallet in the truck console. Fuck walking around with a bunch of random shit on my person all the time.

 

Yes it’s a hell of a nightmare to have to use the actual key when the keypad batteries are dead (after they alerted you a month earlier that they were getting weak). It would take an extra 30 seconds or so to find the key and use it. I doubt I’ll sleep tonight thinking about the possibility if it.

 

I don't even know where the keys are for my locks since I have not had to use them ever in almost 10 years of having electronic locks.

Seriously though, electronic locks are good and safe. I worry more about my truck starting in 5º weather after sitting for 4 days than getting in my house.

 

I had one of those incredibly awesome California tech bro houses that I bought from some silicon valley dorks.

First thing I did was rip out the nest thermostat because it kept running the heat and air-conditioning at the same time. It also would forget its settings if there was a prolonged power outage or it became disconnected from Wi-Fi. This was after nest send me two different thermostats.

Then I ripped out the fancy German induction cooktop and replaced it with gas, which is great to cook with when the power is off.

Then I removed all the electric locks because I found out that if I whack the doorhandle with my palm, I can unlock the front door.

The solar panels were the last thing to go because they were installed without replacing the roof and the roof started leaking.

 

I probably carry more cards than keys.

 

I can't wait for the day I only need my phone, no fobs or credit cards. Most of my home runs off Home Assistant with very little interaction with the web. I only need a credit card for Home Depot and Lowes as they refuse to update their point of sale systems. I do not fear tech/change, I embrace it.

 

Do you keyless guys not own any toys that need to be locked up? Sheds, Bikes, kayaks, motorcycles, boats, trailers all need keys to be secured from theft and to run.

 

Of course, I have toys and sheds and stuff. Keys certainly have their place. But day to day work, store, hanging out, etc.? No keys or cards required.

 

I can leave the keys to that in my home or car and not need to carry them around in my pocket
