    We had carbide fueled cannons. Carbide was plentiful back then (60-70s). Used in helmet lanterns too, before "headlamps" were a thing.
    Now I can't find a steady supply of it.

    Froze my feet off in those things, plastic bags and all. We used to call them galoshes, the little buckle things would break. I remember my first pair of Herman Survivors, those were cool in the 70’s.

    Saw that. Wonder if it works well in the lanterns (I still have one). When we used it, it was just a rock that was put in water. Captured the gas it put out. Wonder if this paste off-gasses as good as or better?
    Obviously, it does (somewhat) as that's why the cannon goes boom. I'm just hesitant about the amount of paste required and the longevity of the off-gas to burn steady for illumination (instead of "boom").

    Some research on my part is needed...

    It's not a paste, It is dry and granular. The big bang cannon had a small scoop built into the detonator for measuring it
