23 tacoma says it needs 6.2q of oil so I put 6 quarts and a little bit extra to make up the .2q and my dipstick always show an inch above the max fill line and this is when it's been off for more than 6 hours and I did pull it out and stick it back in multiple times and that what you see in the picture. Am I doing something wrong here? Or am I over filling it? At times at high rpms I do smell burning oil.

I use 6 quarts of amsoil signature 0w-20 with a wix 57047 filter. I always change the filter, and crush washer that comes with it. As well as the gasket and so on. Also the picture shows 8k miles since the last time i changed my oil. So its not clean fresh oil

I attached a picture to show what I mean

Wipe it, stick it in and pull out when engine is cold

I know it is crazy, but there was a user here stated that his dipstick was not the right size.
Can you get a part number of the dipstick? It is stamped somewhere.

Did you drain the transmission fluid?

no, why would I drain the transmission fluid? That seems like it would have nothing to do with the engine oil. I do a transmission fluid change once my truck hits 60k

Because there are TW members that have accidentally drained their transmission thinking it was the engine oil pan and added fresh oil to the engine.

2GRs drain back a lot when sitting.

Run it, check it after a few minutes. Its probably fine.

Before things get complicated, drain the excess oil either via filter spout or the drain plug.

I’m sure you changed the oil filter? A lot of people on this sight seem to have the same situation with a bunch of ideas on what might be the conclusion, so I’m sure there will be some discussion. What kind of oil? ETC. I just had my first oil change (dealer freebie) @2881 miles with 0-20w synthetic Toyota brand and filter change last Saturday, drove 36 miles home checked the level the next day it was right on the full mark. What would definitely concern me is the burning smell of oil more than anything.

this is my 3rd oil change and I use 6 quarts of amsoil signature 0w-20 with a wix 57047 filter. I always change the filter, and crush washer that comes with it. As well as the gasket and so on.

Ironic this thread came up today. I parked on my street to help thaw my driveway. Truck was level and cold, so I checked my oil, 3200 miles into last change. There were remnants/ signs of oil above the full mark. I put 6 qts in last time. No pics for evidentiary purposes unfortunately.

Flip the dipstick over. Sometimes one side will show higher than the other.

For me with all my oil changes, I usually put just a little less oil then what the manual says, like with yours start with just the 6qts then check it and add it if necessary, you never really get all the old oil out when you drain it
