I saw this cable harness unattached and hangin' loose near the rear of my truck on the driver side when I came out of work this evening.

At first, I thought someone was trying to steal my tailgate. But after further investigation, I suspect this harness may have worked loose from being attached to another harness with electrical tape.

I bought my car used so it's possible that there may have been an aftermarket product that was previously installed and eventually removed.

Any thoughts what this harness was used for?

It’s not stock, is it someone’s attempt at DIY trailer lights? That’s a pretty sad way to do wiring, I’d trace it all down and remove it.

Welcome to the forum. Yup, barnyard mechanic job, if it were mine I’d remove it and seal up any spots in the wire insulation that was damaged by the crimp on connectors.

Got it. I'll dig a little deeper this upcoming weekend. I'm glad it wasn't a botched robbery attempt.

Based on the connector, it looks like the poor installation of a camper shell harness to me.
