heated mirrors moron edition

Hi guys,

I have a 2015 Tacoma that I've been doing some work on for the past year and I decided I wanted to add heated mirrors but after looking through all the forums and trying to get a better understanding of what to do, I have been stumped.

I wanted to make sure I included many details as possible but the the TLDR is; I bought heated mirrors, I got them wired up to the switch that controls the mirror movement but I do not know how to wire up the actual heating element, and I don't even know where to begin on the install.

I bought these mirrors which have the factory 2015 tacoma plug and an option to have the heating element from the mirrors go straight into the door plug or have it wired separately through unterminated cables.


I was always under the assumption that I needed to have the heating element wired through the unterminated cables as the 2015 tacoma doesn't have OEM heated mirrors so the door plug would go to nothing so I purchased this

mirror switch that has a folding mirror option and fits into the original mirror switch so it looks OEM.

At this point I was able to wire in the new mirror switch to the original switch wires as shown in image 3 and the diagram.



and the two remaining wires that are used for the flip out function are still unterminated (image 4) and that is what I wanted to use for the heated mirrors.


I also already have a fuse tap hooked up with a 10a fuse for power but I haven't actually hooked it up to anything yet (image 5) and I have both a SPST and SPDT relay laying around and plenty of wires, terminals, connectors, etc that I need to do whatever it is I need to do.

Now here is where I ask for guidance. I have no clue what to do now, and from me just messing around yesterday I was not able to get the heating elements to work, all my connections that I put together myself are working just fine (the mirrors move with the switch, the fuse tap reads the the correct voltage and outputs power, the other functions of the fuse work just fine, etc) but for the life of me I can not get the heating to work, let alone get it to work when I press the mirror flip button on the switch. I read through so many threads and lots of the wiring diagrams are confusing to me and I'm not the best with electrical but I got this far. If someone can help explain thoroughly or link to a direct quote in a thread that can be of use, please let me know!!!!

I also thought about having the heating element go into the door plug (image 1) then taking the wires from the flip mirror button and somehow wiring them to the door? but I didn't know the first thing about doing that but I thought it would be cool

if anyone needs any more information to either help or just get a better understanding of what im doing for whatever reason I am happy to provide anything needed

 

So let me get this straight, the mirror you purchased just plugged into the main harness in the door? If so it can’t really do that as the door connector only has wires for the mirror and if you have a sport model the mirror signal lights. I have a 2015 that I purchased the kit from a guy on here, was all the wiring, Toyota sienna heated mirror glass, switch and a special timed relay. He modified the switch by taking out the spring in it to be momentarily so it would trip a relay that would energize the mirrors and after 5 minutes it would go off. What you are trying to do might cause you grief as there is no indicators telling you the mirrors are in heat mode and you could inadvertently leave them on and burn them out after time. Being aftermarket nobody makes the glass for these things, trust me I know as I tried this route and broke one in an install and the glass places had nothing, luckily I had only purchased the drivers side as a test. Do a search on this form and there are several threads on putting heated mirrors on your truck, unfortunately the original guy I got the kit off of doesn’t build them anymore.

 

Yea, I figured that connecting the whole thing to the door wouldn’t do anything since none of the 2015 models came equipped with heated mirrors from the factory. I just can’t figure out how to do the wiring with the relay and button. I feel like i’ve been getting more and more information but it’s just not clicking correctly in my head for me to get it done. I’ll keep searching, I appreciate the reply.

 

Im looking to do the something similar. I have a 2009 base model regular cab. All Im looking to do is control my side mirrors with a button to position the mirrors and have turn signal lights on them. Have you been able to make any progess?

 

Okay... my addled 60 year old brain just skipped to the meat of your page, and here are my questions and suggestions. By the way I did this several years back on my 2015. I bought OEM 2013 4Runner mirrors and swapped the perches (expensive way to do this... but I have heat, turn and puddle lights!)

Are you sure your mirrors have heat? Also, it takes a while for them to heat up so my obvious question is have you waited long enough to be sure they are not working? I thought I saw that you bought plugs too? Are you sure those are correct? I wired my heat power separate from the Toyota harness...

I ran a separate wire for the heat into each door. Not sure what switch you chose, but I used an Air-On-Board OEM style switch. I also used a Wolstentech timed relay. Power came from a switched source in the fuse panel. Wiring took a lot of time and some extra fusing to get the timer on the relay set so I like it. Mine comes on when you push the button and stays on for somewhere around 10 minutes and then shuts off regardless of whether the button is still on.

I will go back and read through more carefully and see if I can and anything meaningful...

 

Yea, okay. I remember that I looked into a switch like what you have and said no as the probability of it not working was higher than a simple switch. I think it would be in your best interest to run some wire and hard wire the heat separate from the OEM. What your trying to do with factory makes sense but I don't think its going to work.

So, take a power source to your relay. One side is your switch. One side is power out. The out goes to the mirrors and should power them if they are correctly made with heat elements. lots of help on that part on the web and in here. Thinking your switch is problem; but, I couldn't make sense of the wires from the mirror. I would go back and actually check that everything goes as it is supposed to wire by wire.

As someone else stated there are several how to's on here-go look at their methods.

 

Do you have a breakdown or can you share better pictures of how you wired the switch to the mirror?

 

Ok so I'm beginning to understand this. What isn't being considered is the original intent of the folding mirror switch, 2 motors requires more power and separate wiring and fused circuits. So in truth the trigger is just a low amp circuit and only one pole from the folding mirror switch needs to be used, not both 1 and 2 which would have to be wired as individual circuits and fused as such. Just use 1 or 2 and wire the power together to the mirrors since the amp requirements are much lower than running the folding motors. Is this correct? I've kind of figured out the timer too, the folding mirror switch won't have a timer built in and one needs to be installed for the heat to be timed, correct? https://youtu.be/oJEsI2TRaLk
