So I’ve been keeping an eye out for a nice used cap for my 2015 AC long bed and there are a ton of 3rd gen caps on the market but quite a few less 2nd gen. This lead me to dig into fit/compatibility research between gens but all the advice on the forums has lead me to believe that all the different design nuances between generations (e.g., tailgate, cab shape, bed height, etc.) means they’re not really compatible unless I want to deal with leakage, poor alignment, ect. However I found this 3rd gen RSI SmartCap on marketplace displayed on a 2nd gen and the fit looks perfect.

Anyone know about fit issues with these? Are there other models that fit across gens? (Specifically looking for RTT compatible toppers like alucab or ARE)

    check their websites for fitment.

    shortbed and longbed are different.
    05-15 and 16-23 are different.

You say the fit looks perfect.

Is that in in person inspection with a bright light at potential leak points?

    Or just online photos?

Seems each manuf would know your answer. Tried any of them?

Nothing worse than spending a buttload of $$$ on something that is ill fitting and leaking. I would buy one in a pinch if I wanted a cheap $200 shell but not something like this one. The 3rd gen sides are taller and the tailgate is curved.

Thanks for the responses! I wasn't intending on asking the community here to basically do the research for me, just curious if people had first or second hand experience with specific products to confirm or disprove fit. I have been checking dimensions and fit on the manufacturers websites but like Bill mentioned that doesn't tell me if there would be seal issues. I did contact ARE about one of their contractor caps fitting on multiple gens and they said it would but they didn't give any detail and most of the info I found online made me skeptical. I will reach out to RSI to see what they say about the smart cap... the dimensions are exactly the same from the 2nd and 3rd gen taco caps but I'm wondering if they modify/change the seals and other parts to fit the different shape of the beds.

3rd gen caps extend past where the 2nd gens would end. The 3rd gen tailgate has a bit of a duck tail to it so the 3rd gen would be too long on a 2nd. I know this because I tried it

If you want a 3rd gen cap to fit you can always swap the bed sides and tailgate to a 3rd gen, but thats not cost effective.
