Oh shit, did you read that Wall Street Journal article?
Investigative reporting isn't dead.

That 6.67 refers to the "multiplier" that our all-wise goobermint applies to their calculations regarding "compliance credits".

Compliance Credits?
What's that?
[I hear you asking]

Well, it's complicated but it basically means "Carbon Credits".
What's in a name though, hey?

It's a way to coerce the auto makers to make EVs.
ICE engines now have impossible standards to meet (and penalties apply).
EVs, OTOH, get compliance credits, with an arbitrary multiplier of 6.67.
That's not 6.67 percent, but 6.67.

What it means is that new gas powered vehicles are way more expensive than they would be otherwise...
... and Tesla (which only makes EVs) has loads of "Compliance Credits" to sell to other automakers, who are still making nasty ICEs.
This is a profit for Tesla to the tune of billions of dollars a year.
Tesla has been able to lower prices several times as a result.
So other automakers not named Tesla are getting it in the a$$ from both Tesla and the gov't.
Cuz their EVs ain't selling... the market appears to have collapsed.
Mind you, there is a market for EVs, but it's a lot smaller than was thought.

I don't blame Tesla, they didn't write the law
I believe this beauty was buried in the "Inflation Reduction Act" [snickers]
The DOT and the EPA were given legal power to cook up this scheme, for the obvious purpose of forcing EV adoption.

Ironically, it appears that an environmental organization made a stink, saying the multiplier is prima facie illegal.
The Wall Street Journal agrees.
