Like the others already said, prob real and deer was already dead. Years ago I was driving a side loader hauling poles on a transmission right of way about two miles off road and way into a deer club. Crew had run up on a group of hunters. As I drove up to them I saw a buck laying in the right of way in chest high dog fennel. Side loader is a big 10 wheel vehicle with articulating boom, little center cab with seat at about 8’ riding height. You lock all axles in and diffs and it’s a dang Abram’s tank. Mentioned the buck i’d seen to the group who were standing at another buck in an open area near a tower stand. They acted surprised and shouted “where?” So I pointed back where I’d seen it. Said they’d been looking for him for two hours lol.

8 degrees here. Pond is freezing over. Feeding the woodstove and trying to get well. Did watch Jeremiah Johnson yesterday. Deer season ended Jan.1.

Sighted in (more or less) the new muzzleloader yesterday. Got it where I wanted at 50 (bottom plate, 2 low and right shots where fire no adjustment to confirm then 3rd shot was just high of dead center), but when I moved out to 100 I couldn't hit the plate (2 misses 1 no hold over, 1 holding top of plate), 75 was an inch low so I guess I need a bigger target to see what's happening at 100 IMG_20240120_140217_471.jpg

100 gr 777 powder and Thompson center cheap shots, federal primers. Those bullets are 240 gr so I would have figured they would be screaming (well comparatively). But the gun has a seemingly short barrel so I could be losing some velocity that the Internet gets lol. Some video said the best place to start was 100 gr of powder and 300 gr of bullet. I've got a pocket scale coming in this week so I figured I would measure 100 gr by volume and see what that is by weight and start having the most consistent loads possible

    “Can you skin griz pilgrim?”
What me and a friend asked the Dads at a sunday school fishing event on my pond. We loaded their stringers up when they said they wanted to keep some fish. All we did was bait hooks and string fish for the kids while dads fished too. Said they were still cleaning fish at 10 pm that night. lolIMG_0456.jpg

I worked up my loads for my in-line the same way as my flintlock. Start out low powder wise and work my way up. Me? I'd start at 75 or 80gr and work up. Lest anyone think 80gr is light, remember the original 45-70 was just that. 70gr blackpowder pushing a 300gr projectile. Hundreds of thousands of dead buffalo can't be wrong.

When I was younger and full of piss and vinegar (dumb) I'd be in a deer stand I didn't care how cold it was. One very cold morning I had a group of does come in. Before they got to within bow range periodically one or two of them would snap their head up and stare at me. It took a moment or two for me to realize the were seeing my breath. I almost passed out trying to hold my breath trying to get a shot before they had enough and wondered off.

Back in the day when I shot an 80# compound, "younger and full of piss and vinegar (dumb)", I was sitting in my stand and it was 25 degrees in GA, I was freezing my ass off, so I thought I would draw the bow and stretch my muscles, so about 3/4's of the way through the draw cycle I wimped out and that bow practically jerked my shoulder out of socket!! Hurt like a mofo!! That was the last time I hunted at 80#'s........... :annoyed::amen:

I bought a new Mathews years ago with 70# limbs, shot several deer with it. I got older, got rid of the bow because of shoulder issues and bought a used Bear with adjustments from 15# to 70# and shot a deer with it a few years ago set on 42#. I learned I don't need the latest and greatest or the highest poundage I can draw :D
