I agree 100%. I was refering to the idiots (such as myself) that cranked up their draw weight mainly to be cool. We absolutely dont need it here, we just did it hoping someone would ask 'what weight you got that set on?'
I can see it being beneficial for shooting longer ranges with heavy arrows. Or with animals that are tougher to penetrate.

Could not agree more! I find myself passing up lesser doable shots, for that perfect pass-thru or heart shot!!

Another reason for the lower poundage - a few years ago, for 2 seasons in a row I had a nice 8 point show up beneath my stand and the only shot was almost straight down, not being able to stand up, drawing & releasing from a seated position! You really appreciate the lower poundage in these situations.

My old Hoyt Afterburner and one of the 8 points shot straight down from a seated position.

So I pulled that photo off of photobucket. The other guys photo reminded me I had it. Looking it up on Tineye the earliest date I found it was 2009. Fifteen years ago. I wonder if those things are still defying gravity. I also found this pic. That shirt almost has to be custom made doesn't it?

It was definitely scary if you looked at the broadhead position to your grip hand.

That never bothered me. What I remember are the people who went stupid lite arrow weight with the overdraw. Shot some good scores 3D, bounced some arrows off the side of deer hunting.

The 13 pt I shot with a High Country Supreme with an overdraw in 2003 in N.C. I had the bow for many years. I missed more with it than I killed.

He's got it all, sticker point, crab claw, and a 6" drop tine :D

We all talk about 70, 80, 90lb draw weight, overdraws, penetration... Guys with 45lb recurves shooting 600gr arrows at a 180fps with a COC broadhead are blowing thru deer (and elk) without issue. Killing critters with a sharp pointy stick ain't hard. Like @AKSig88 said, shot placement rules. Sometimes we way over complicate things.

Yes, a shot to the right place will kill almost any animal from a certain distance. With archery everything comes down to, after a certain distance, yardage judgment. If you are going to shoot at an Elk at 50 yrds with a 180 ft per second arrow you better be down to the inch. What weight arrow I shot, and poundage of bow, never came down to penetration necessarily, more so the mitigation of yardage judgment. I guess now with the advent of rangefinders that's not so important, if you have time to get your range finder out and dick with it, but I don't dick with rangefinders.

I see there isn’t to many dedicated western hunters, with the echo chamber that’s going on here. If you hunt low success units, and out of state tags which you will, because draws ain’t easy; you’ll be losing a lot of money going hard with a 40 lb bow shooting a 600 gr arrow.

I will say that I use to overdraw; but I don’t anymore. I had a habit sometimes of putting my fingers out a wee bit relaxing my hand torque off the riser. Usually shooting upward on a mountainside when trying to balance my bow. Gravity and such.

Anywho, I got myself one day. I use only fixed broadheads, and got my finger pretty good. I’ll chase speed, but the extra two inches to clear my hand doesn’t really change anything for me in speed or spine. Especially at 80#s. I’d probably still do it if I ever went back to shooting a target bow.

As far as dicking with a rangefinder, you take it out, and click it. The end. If you lose your opportunity of a shot on an animal in that time, you never had a shot. In my experience.

I guess, like anything, it depends on how seriously you want to take it and how much effort you are willing to commit to it. Before I had kids, and I was at a 3D tournament every weekend shooting unmarked yardages out to 60 yards, come deer season I was fairly confident in my ability to make a good shot. To the current topic. I didn't choose a poundage for penetration, I chose it to make yardage judgment somewhat less critical. Nowadays as soon as I get in the stand I take out my rangefinder and shoot yardages around me. But then it goes back in the pack and in the heat of the moment I count on my ability to make the shot. I shoot the highest poundage I can comfortably to make sure if I'm off a yard or two it's not a missed shot or a wounded deer.

When I go to the stand, I have my binoculars. rangefinder and grunt call strapped on. At the butt crack of dawn I range trees all around my stand. Since I tend to keep my shots under 30 yards, I can get away with one pin, so I generally will not range again.

I have rifle & bow hunted Colorado a handful of times years ago and must say it was some of the most beautiful & epic hunts I have been on. I harvested 2 nice bulls with my rifle and one cow elk with my bow. I did come close to having shots and a few nice bulls with my bow, but never got the shot I wanted, or got busted by cow elk. I witnessed full on rutting and bugling activity that cannot be put into words how awesome it was!! The area was north of the Routt National Forest.
