gear oil

I'm about to change the gear oil in my diffs. on a 2012 Tacoma 4L 6cyl.
It calls for 75W-85, (6 qts)), I have enough

$29 75w-90 Synthetic Gear Lube - 1 Quart (Pack of 2)

75w-90 on hand.
Can I use that or would it be detrimental to the the unit?

As long as it's GL5 probably not gona hurt anything but you may have slightly lower fuel mileage due to it being thicker oil.

75W-90 GL5 is A-OK and won't hurt anything. Barely any difference in the weights and certainly not enough to do anything for our Tacomas. Only a couple brands even make a 75W-85 and they aren't anything special.

If I told you the transfer case did NOT change between 2007 and 2012, would you believe me?
And that in 2007 the recommended fluid was 75-90.

 

Thanks everyone for answering my question on gear oil.
My next question is, What should I be using for the transmission?
It's a 2012 4 wd 6 cyl 4L? with 160,000 miles. I have never changed the fluid.
As I mentioned in a previous post, the shop that is going to do the fluid change
says his research indicated that because of a certain additive in the factory
fluid, I should change the filter and re-use the fluid. Seems counterproductive
to me. My appointment is for Monday morning.
I will do the transfer case and diffs. myself.

 

Assuming it's an automatic probably either Toyota WS or Valvoline MaxLife, there's a specific fill procedure (see the thread below) but note the specified check temperature was changed to 95-115F Per TSB 0129-08 (see the tsb attached below).
