Oh yes another beautiful day in the neighborhood! Work out day! Using the kettlebells again. Kicked my butt the last time. We shall see how it goes today.
If I have energy left after my work out, I think I need to start trimming the bushes. They are getting a bit over grown. Got a few days of sunshine, so I have great weather to be outside!
My sympathy to everyone battling health issues! Not a good place to be. Work hard to get through these times and it will only make you appreciate the good times more. Stay tough!

:pccoffee: Good Morning Porch Pals & Sue! Rain is supposedly stopped for the week - 1.75" yesterday. We have (think they said) the 6th wettest January at 5.6"! Normally, one of the driest months. Sun is supposed to be out this PM, so need to undo the freeze protectors, and water the greenhouse, and do some RAV4 work.

I think I'm glad I had most of my medical disasters back when I was working! Two replaced knees, a hernia, prostrate cancer and radiation for that, overweight with Type II. Except for the congestive heart failure after about 6 months of retirement, I'm knocking on wood!

That thing is SOAKED with Kroil. Enough so two weeks ago, I had to send myself home from the fumes!

HA! I knew I had the right girl when she got all huffy because a girl I hadn't seen for a year sent me a Christmas card.

    Here's some slow day stuff.....

Swapped out the cheap ebay find (test) deflector for "full size" fit. Not only does the roof rack sing, both the sunroof covers can sound like the car is being torn apart in high winds. Test found a cure, waited for a cheap "correction", and just finally bought it before they coat the vehicle. Less wind noise up there now too.

    20240125_104512.jpg
    20240125_132111.jpg

There were not "in-channel" window vents when we got the car. Now there are. So, all the stuff that will get coated is exposed again, and they fit so much nicer! Cleaner!

So, no one wants to cook, and off to Mr. Taco we go. Hey! On Thursdays, you get Mariachi! That was a great time. The bangles on the guitar players pants were heavy - Carol checked - so I said that made them a HEAVY METAL BAND! :rimshot: We all had fun singing along to Under the Board Walk. I gave the bass player my "standard 1980's road bar joke request" - Ride Across the River (Brothers in Arms) by Dire Straights. It's a joke because it's a pretty mournful tune, that no one in their right mind would play in a bar! But, they were great!

So, coming home from the hangar, I thought I needed this mileage milestone, because upside down, it would be.....

Proper form with Kettle Bells is essential. They are a good workout.

I have the Weathertech deflectors on my Tacoma. Really happy with them. Looks like you had dinner with a full Mariachi Band. we do not have a lot of mariachi bands here. I hoped you tipped them well. Musicians usually are not paid all that well from restaurants and depend on tips a lot.

Good morning. The snow is almost gone now. Still going to be another wet day outside. Going out for dinner and music tonight.

Good morning...humid and 63* in the 386 area code. (north Florida). The land of Live Oaks and Spanish moss. Sometimes it looks like its straight out of a Scooby Doo episode. Had some rain in the night and the tree frogs are enjoying the moisture and singing about it.
Big cup of Folgers and a blueberry nutrigrain bar in front of me.
Ikea delivery this morning...so i have to find a spot in the home to put 30 some boxes/800 lbs. of particle board "wonder". Yippie.

Good idea 95SLE. So far only sore muscles. Hope it stays that way.
Up in our old apple tree butchering it yesterday. Hoping I didn’t over do it and it produces better this year.
Meeting a young bud for a brunch today. Haven’t seen him in a while. He was an SF helicopter pilot mostly gin South America. Had some crazy stories about his time there.
Flurries now, but suppose to be cloudy and 47* today. We will see if it charges my yard lights enough.
Everyone do something special and don’t waste this day!

That earlier comment about working on an apple tree made me think of my grandfather. Standing behind his house in SE Indianapolis was an apple tree with many grafted limbs. It had numerous types of apples - various types and sizes all produced on the same tree. Today I can't imagine how this feat was accomplished but he knew how to harvest the cuttings from the type of fruit tree he wanted - then successfully splice them into his backyard pet.

I wonder if this craft endures today - some skilled arborist somewhere must know the way to make this work. My dad said he would make the "V" cuts with a straight razor, bind the joint with twine and cover it with some sort of sealant. Some would "take" and some would not - and he would simply keep trying until it worked and the cutting survived.

A lot of our roses are grafted. If the top freezes dead, the roots come up with a completely different color rose. Pretty interesting.

:pccoffee:  sixtys/wannabes/area coders. (610 here if it matters to anyone.) I had a busy day yesterday with two appointments during the day and a 4-hour zoom-like meeting after dinner. In the midst of all that my former boss at Comcast sent me an email asking if I had any interest in coming back as a contractor to support an upcoming software upgrade. Uhmmm what? Mind you, I left their employ two years ago almost to the day. I was flattered, but also unsure about what I should do.

On the one hand it would be fun to be back in regular contact with all of the great people I worked with, and I did enjoy the invigorating challenge of upgrading hundreds of systems with the precision, accuracy and timing necessary to ensure no customer impact whatsoever; our team was rightly proud of our record in that particular area. And the extra dollars would let me do something utterly stupid like taking a loonnngggg trip somewhere or buy a bucket list car or maybe a garage to put it in.

On the other hand, although I loved my work and the people I worked with, I was truly ready to leave when I called it quits. I don't know if going back would just remind of the reasons I made that decision. And it's not like I can't find stuff to do to fill my days -- although admittedly sometimes I have issues with motivation! Finally, my daughter-in-law celebrated a birthday yesterday, but it was mixed with sadness as a close friend of hers lost her husband on the same day. The moral being: life is short. Do I really want to spend a chunk of it upgrading software...?

The way I read this, you are the one in the position of power in this negotiation. You have the option to accept or decline the return and to structure it to fit your needs. If you want to get back into it I would suggest setting up the terms and conditions YOU want and sticking to them. Make it worth your time with a clearly defined pay scale and hours of work and go from there. Only want to work 3 days? Get it in writing. No phone calls after hours? Put it in writing. Have existing vacation plans or needs? Again, put it all in writing and if they don't uphold their end then you walk. They need you more than you need their BS at this point in life so make sure it fits your needs. Good luck.

I've got a very old apple tree and it has lousy apples for eating, but the apples are wonderful in a pie. And the tree is injured and has a pretty big hollow on one side, and limbs die every year. But it's a tough old tree and it send out new shoots and replaces the dead wood as fast as they die.

I've let a sucker from a root grow for a few years and it's over six feet tall now. I let it grow with the idea that the old tree may be dangerous and need to come down, and the sucker would replace it. But also with the idea that I could graft a branch or two from good eating apple trees. But honestly... I'm a little scared to do it. I don't think a failure would harm the tree so I don't know what my hesitation is about. Maybe this year? Is it a good time to do it in the winter? Or would spring be better?

Oh, and ALL commercially produced "breeds" of apple trees are grafts close to the root. Apple trees don't breed true, so grafts are necessary to get consistent types of apples.
