    welcome

absolutely need, no if you can live with the light on
members have gotten programmable ones to clone their existing ID numbers so they don't have the light on and don't have to mess with changing the IDs when swapping sets

It's not necessary, but the light would bother me. If you are going to use them for a few winters to come, it might be a good investment.

I prefer to have working TPMS, but for short term use I could probably live with looking at the light. I don't live where swapping to winter tires is a thing, but would assume 2-3 months? And you're probably not going to be on many long-distance high-speed drives.

It just doesn't cost that much, around $60-$80 for a set of 4 sensors and any tire store will mount and program them at no additional cost when buying new tires. That works out to about the cost of 20 gallons of fuel (one full tank), every 10 years or so. At that low cost there isn't much excuse to not have sensors that work. I wouldn't pay $100+ per sensor, but we don't have to. Having to do it for 2 sets of tires when one set isn't going to be on long might change my mind for that set.

FWIW I used to be a doubter about the usefulness of sensors. Until I ran over road debris at 75 mph and punched a 1/2" hole in a tire. I'd have never known until the tire came apart without the sensor. When the light came on I had just barely enough time to get to the shoulder and slowed down to a safe speed before that happened. Less than 10 seconds after the light came on the tire was completely flat.

    Thank you everyone for answering.
And thanks for the few chuckles..
Mostly i was curious if there were sensors in the wheels at all. The wife’s crv uses the abs system to indicate tire pressure. I know, look it up. It’s a real thing. Thought there wasn’t sensors in the Tacoma because if i looked at tire pressure before i started moving there would be dashes at each tire on tp display on dash.
I’ll live with the light till i can’t. Should have asked before buying and mounting the snows.

I’m not wiring genius, so I’m not sure if this is possible on the Tacoma.

I also have an 08 FJ. Had a set of winter tires on steel wheels, I did not use sensors with that set. There is a hack to splice a jumper between two wires to turn off the TPMS light on the dash. I took that idea & went one step further. I installed a micro toggle switch in the jumper. I placed the switch in the dash compartment fwd of the steering wheel.

This allows me to flip the switch & run my winter tires. When I remove winter rubber, I flip the switch, TMS works as advertised.

I’m not sure if this is an option or something you would want to do. There are quite a few here that are good at some of these wiring hacks. They may be of some help.

It takes a minute or two of driving to start displaying the tire pressures instead of the dashes. I believe they use the vehicle telemetry to determine the position of each sensor (Driver Front/Rear, Passenger Front/Rear) which takes a bit of driving around to sort out.

Any clue as to which wires? Sounds like a good idea!
