My 1989 Toyota Pickup won't consistently start. First thing I did was replace the positive battery terminal, no difference. Then put in a brand new battery, no difference. Then put in a brand new starter, no difference.

On cold starts I turn the key and it's completely silent. Nothing. And then after 4 or 5 turns of the key it finally struggles to start up. Whenever I put a jumping power bank on the battery it seems to fire up right away. Any ideas where I should be looking next next?

If you are turning the key and it just clicks or does nothing a few times and then tries to start, you might have a bad ignition switch or a bad battery/ground connection. You also need to check voltage of your new battery since you say it struggles to start when it does crank

I think the older trucks with automatics didnt have a starter relay. current flowed straight from the ignition switch to the starter solenoid. On my 1990 I fixed mine by wiring in a relay.

Truck has a manual transmission - guessing the relay issue won't apply here then? The optima yellow top is tested and showing the correct voltage, and the brand new starter is known functional as well. Will verify there are no issues with a bad ground.

Would anyone happen to have a walk thru on replacing the ignition switch? We're not talking about the actual ignition key cylinder, correct?
