I have a base Tacoma, manual, NO electric windows, doors, or mirrors. I'd like to change the basic wipers to intermittent wipers. My dealer said it's not just a matter of plugging in an intermittent wiper arm. He said it can't be done bc the wiring to truck's computer isn't set up for intermittent wipers. Posts here seem to indicate otherwise. Can I just swap out the arms?

I have a 2015 base model I bought new. I’ve added cruise control, backup camera, and intermittent wipers. They were all plug and play.

My 13 5 lug worked fine.

Whoever gave you that info should be avoided in the future.

My unit came from a Camry. Used sells for less than one advertised for the more popular Tacoma

Maybe the dealer was hoping you would get them to do it and they could charge you a crap load. Seems to be a few threads about dealerships charging big money for simple jobs. OP should just be a plug an play.

Worked on my 2014 base model. Just find the part # you need and order it. Don't tell them what it's for. There is a circuit board on the intermittent wiper switch that isn't on the base model 2 speed switch. It has all the electronics needed in the switch. It doesn't communicate with the ECU for the intermittent function.

I really don't understand how no one in the dealer or any parts person understands this. When I went to get a new stalk, multiple dealers told me the same thing. Some went so far as to say I had to change the motor out. Rather ridiculous.

As noted. Your dealer is either an idiot or a crook. They can be both at the same time also. TWorld members most always have the right answers.

My 14 is a base model. Bought the intermittent wiper stalk and it works great.

14, base, but not as base as it got (power windows, but not intermittent wipers), added intermittent wiper stalk in a jiffy. No probs. Dealer=idiot, probably.

Not all but most parts counter people know how to enter your vehicle info and order the parts you want. Doing anything beyond that is above their head. Although some are highly knowledgeable. I’ve learned a few things just standing there waiting my turn listening.

A recent thread someone wanted to replace the worn negative battery cable. Toyota only sells the entire harness. Sometimes ya gotta be smarter than the part you’re replacing.

It’s because most parts guys aren’t mechanics.
And most electronic parts are “No return” parts.
It’s much easier to NOT sell you a part, than it is to sell you a part that will not work.
And then have to deal with an angry customer because you won’t take the part back.
The default answer is almost always going to be, “It won’t work”.
That answer involves no research, and is the “safe” answer.

I have a 2014. My switch got glitchy. Went to the dealer to get a replacement. Parts guy: "do you have intermittent wipers?" Me: "Yes". Parts guy: "I'm only asking because if you didn't, you can plug-and-play swap in the intermittent stalk if you wanted to."
