I'm spoiled. My shop is heated hydronic...

And I'm not even home to enjoy it.

Hope you guys don't mind a little snow blower action in here :anonymous:

So, co-worker on Wednesday was asking if anybody wanted a snow blower. Kept going round and round and I finally said "I brought my truck, we'll load it up if you're giving it away". Turns out it was my old managers blower he was giving to the guy and he didn't want it. I figure why not. Manager gets there and we unload it from his truck to my truck (which ironically is a 2021 Tacoma in MGM).

Claimed the electric start went out when he was trying to get it going and the pull start rope was broke. He had it at a shop and it worked for a little bit, but he got fed up and bought a new one. I got it home and whacked the starter with a hammer. It turned over just fine and ran on choke for a brief time. Wouldn't start anymore after that. We'll find out why later...

Ordered a new carb, pull rope with handle, and some tire tubes in case I needed them. Short investigation reviled the shop put on the wrong carb and did some other hackery.

Kinda cramped for room, but didn't feel like moving the car out.

Removed plastics, carb, and engine cover.

It came with a full tank of gas, that didn't smell too bad? However when I tried to drain it through the hose nothing came out. Turns out the tank was plugged and required some sketchy hackery to get it freed up...

The gas was also really, really bad. I used a bucket that had some white primer residue in it so you can really see how nasty it is.

Next order of business was to re-string the pull start assembly. Briggs in their infinite wisdom decided to rivet it to the engine shroud...

Drilled out the rivets, installed new rope and handle, and used some self threading 1/4-20 screws to install it back to the shroud.

    Installed shroud and new carb

Last thing to do today was try and figure out the one tire that kept going flat. Found out I bought the wrong tube, so I was going to have to get creative. The bead was seriously corroded as seen by how much it leaked...

Popped the bead on both sides, cleaned the bead of the tire up, and sanded the rust of the wheel. Didn't have any bead sealer, but had a full bottle of Permatex Aviation Sealant. As of half an hour ago it's still holding air :D

Oil was drained and filled. It was mostly gas o_O

That's all I got done today. Need to pick up some cleaner to really flush the fuel tank and some new hose.

The best part is I'll probably have $50-$60 in the whole thing. I can use the tubes I couldn't use in my wheelbarrow that the tires keep going flat, so nothing wasted there. I had oil left over so no extra money there. I hope to get around $350 for it. Not bothering with Marketplace; it's easier to set out front since I live on a busy road. Sold that old riding mower in an hour to the first person who looked at it.

Always nice getting free yard equipment that just needs a good once over to get it running before selling it quick.

Fuel tank cleaned out a little better, assembled, and test ran. Runs pretty good for a 20 year old machine. Was surprised I didn't have to adjust the valves, but snow blowers typically are low hour engines.

This took a turn for the better last night.

    IMG_1991.jpg

This whole split was due to this little slider being stuck. It had a burr all the way around and caused it to get stuck on what it slides on. The shuttle fork goes in the groove and moves 3/8" front or back to engage the gears. I got a grinding bit on the dremel and fixed it. Then Cole and I started reassembly.

Wow!! So it wasn't anything major part failure.... It was more major work to get to the part.

In this type of situation do you charge by the hour or the job? Cause now it can get around that you are experienced in Kioti/Kubota tranny repair.

Oh & do you have a new set of filters? Cause that's one thing about Kioti's.... That filter set is not cheap.

I'm gonna charge him by the hour on this one, it's a good friend so I won't be to bad on him. He did give me a Hustler 60" zero turn with a vacuum system on it this summer :anonymous:

I got to stop by the Kioti dealer on the way home and get a new hydraulic filter

You think you can cross reference that filter to like a Baldwin or Napa number?

I phrased that wrong. I personally don't need the filter number for myself, but it might be a good option for the owner. If you have the Kioti # (don't make any special trips, I'm just curious) handy I can actually cross ref it online here.

I know what you meant, here's the number off the Kioti filter, I took a picture of it last night. T2185-38031

Been awhile. Lots of catching up to do.

We had a steady driving rain a few weeks back that caused flooding all over my area. Nothing at my house which is on a hill, but my BIL/SIL’s house got it good. 3’ of water in their basement, shed got flooded real good. His snowblower and 2-stroke tiller were in the shed. Water line made it up to mid chute, so I’d say the engine was submerged. He’s had issues with this blower since they bought their house. Always had to run it partially choked. I pulled the carb, used some acid to clean the jet, drained the bowl and cleaned it, checked for water in the cylinder, checked the oil WHICH HASN’T BEEN CHANGED IN 9 yrs. Oil level was 3-4x what it should have been, indicating water in the crank case.

Drained water for 25 seconds before the oil started to flow out, refilled with new fresh oil, cleaned the plug, it fired up on second pull. He says it’s never run better. There was barely any actual oil in that poor blower. After it ran for 30 minutes, I checked the oil again to make sure there was no water left, oil looked great but there was milky condensation in the dipstick tube. Cleaned that out, let it run another 30 minutes and it was squeaky clean.

FYI: 14k gold test solution (muriatic acid) is *awesome* for cleaning jets. Try it.

The tiller was never run, brand new. After it flooded we had a good freeze. It wouldn’t even turn over, frozen solid. Let it thaw out, sprayed wd40 in the cylinder, cleaned the sediment from the carb, mixed up some fuel, pulled a million times and it finally sputtered to life.

So, that crosses to a Baldwin BT8488 or Napa 7098. Both are about the same price (online) as the OEM Kioti filter. So, I guess it comes down to availability where you're at.
