This. First thing my dad did when I got my license. Find your limits in an empty parking lot, and try to find one without light poles :D
...my friend bought a new Xterra a long time ago, this is exactly how I taught her to drive it in the snow. At the Tahoe airport parking lot late at night, and yes the PD rolled up, we explained what was going on, they laughed at us, and left us to our shenanigans. The lack of plates and windshield registration sticker might have helped our cause.

Oh! And other people will drive like idiots, don't do what they're doing. Operate at your comfort level.

Also, general rule of thumb with snow, keep flashlights and some warm clothes and snow gear handy in case you do get hung up somewhere. You might run into something where someone else messes up and now you're in the cold for a while.

Not a lot of close first responders on 80, 50, or 88! You're literally looking at responses coming from Alta and Colfax from the west and truckee from the east. If something happens help is going to be a while! On 50 it's pollock from the west and south lake from the east. Can take over an hour or two under ideal situations sometimes.

Other gear are 2 clevis rings that works on your rigs attachment points (some vehicles need bumper adapters in the bumpers, normally with the spare tire stuffs), and a strap so if you get hung up in a berm someone can help you out, jumper cables (batteries don't like cold), and the traction boards work surprisingly well if you get some. I've used mine on more recoveries than my winch tbh

Hey Bay Area folks, anybody have experience with Fix Auto in Alameda (formerly Alameda Collision Repair)?

My 2011 TRD was creamed while parked and the frame is bent. State Farm has taken full liability, but I need to find a shop that I trust to do the repair.

    Any thoughts?

They are a franchise. I have a friend that manages one of their locations.

Just like any other corporate style body shop, they operate on a razor thin budget and push quantity over quality.

I had my Type R repaired at the one here in town. The quality of the repair was excellent. The R is a three part pearl which makes it a difficult paint to match accurately and you cannot tell.

Dropped it off Monday at 2pm and picked it up today at 4:30pm. Miles the owner is a mom and pop shop. $1420 for the locker, overall $2100 after taxes, front and rear diff oil change, by a professional with professional tools. I am happy I finally did it.

now I have to wire it up.

I’d say you need a longer selfie stick. Or telephoto with a looong delay timer.

Anyone interested in a single thule xsporter rack? I am trying to get one for my truck to carry the kayak so I can rest the kayak on the roof and then 1 thule rack for extra support. If anyone is interested, I can buy a set probably like $300-$400 on FB or CL and split with someone.
