hey guys I have a 2019 Tacoma with a hair under 39k miles. I took it to a specific dealership for the first time as I moved. Took in for a routine oil change. Between services it was 10 months. To my surprise they hit me with all this. I don’t buy it but I’m also not a mechanic. How can a truck barely broken in be this broken. If it matters I do have method wheels on 285s. What would yall do?

    Hi,
The rear shock labor is an error, it is the same labor as the rack. It should be about 1/2 to 1 hr labor. Seems early to have the rack wear out. My 2nd gen didn't need it till 140k. A non OEM rack & install is about $1,500 installed. I suggest to pressure wash under the truck and areas of concern and keep an eye on it for the next oil change.
When the rack starts to go bad the steering gets funky.

Front shocks are 2.1 hours for both, rear is 0.9 both.

no idea where their labour came from.

Business is slow, they have to make it up somehow.

The dealers don't like to sell and install it, but there is a gasket kit for the rack and pinion instead of replacing the whole damn thing. In your case it would be 04445-04040

learn to do your own basic maintenance and stay away from that dealership.
I'd say leave a bad review, but they'd have it buried in 5 star fakes before nightfall.

    Scam.

I would do none of that, and also never go back to that specific dealer.

Do you park in the garage or in the same spot in the driveway? Just keep an eye out for leaks, in case there is some truth to what they're selling.

Also, anything transmission related should be covered under the factory warranty, still (60k powertrain).

The rear shocks are actually the biggest ripoff of all on there, and there is likely nothing wrong with them at that mileage (unless you hammer washboard roads with a loaded bed).

Take your time to find an independent mechanic if you don't like to do maintenance or other work yourself. Dealer service centers are extremely high margin.

Those are all seeps. The rack seep will continue to get worse over time. The one at the trans is barely seeping. Clean them off and keep trucking. Just keep an eye on them. Like someone else said, it looks like they quoted the rear shocks at the rack labor rate. I'd like to see pictures of the rear shocks. I have seen them go bad in as little as 5k miles.

Please tell us what dealership this is so everyone knows to stay away. That is borderline criminal.

$1365 labor to replace the rear shocks?!? Dafuq?

I normally laugh at people who say to call corporate, but I'd make a phone call to Toyota about that one.

They want to replace the rack ????

    That’s down right thievery..
I don’t see anything wrong with anything there…
Do not let them touch your truck.
Must be a young kid brainwashed to sell..
    That’s what they do..

Can the seal kit be installed with the rack in the truck? If only the outer seals need to be replaced?

That’s why they call them stealers. I would never go back either. That is way over the top. +$1365 for shock install. Lol. 1/2 hr per side.
    tops $400 with parts

total labor $3500 @ $200/hr = 17.5 hrs. They would really have the truck 3 days?

Seal kits don’t fix rack leaks, the rack is leaking typically because it has play and wear in the shaft.

Fyi, the rack on my Lexus has looked like that for 10 years. Just let it go.
