The desert brush is brutal to paint. Trails are narrow and in the desert you will be brushing up against all different kind of plants. Black was the worst, had a black truck when I lived there and it looked terrible quickly. But honestly any color the pinstripes are noticeable if you are looking hard enough. Lighter colors usually hide it better

Ok, but in a forested area (for example where I live) there is a lot more vegetation to scratch a taco. The desert is wide open in comparison.

Our deserts are not all wide open.
Some trails lead you down into semi-dry creeks where trees and plants grow.
We feel terrible cutting down these plants or going trading off the path just to not scratch our paint. :)

Ok maybe what is meant is that, although vegetation is relatively rare in Arizona, when one does encounter it, it tends to be relatively abrasive. I could believe that.

When I was mountain biking in the desert outside of Scottsdale I stepped on a nasty cactus that went through my shoe and into my foot. Ouch! Yes I was warned. Newbie mistake.

The desert was a very foreign place to me. It reminded me of a giant gravel pit. There was no water, no trees, no birds, just sun, wind, and gravel.
