    Great exhaust system, no drone.

Incorrect, this exhaust is a scam and drones at 2k rpm. Lacks back pressure below 2k where the truck needs it. Dyno charts don’t show data below 2k for obvious reasons. What a shame, wanted to live this system. I hate false marketing.

From what i have learned from several car tuning experts, back pressure is not desired, contrary to popular belief. Not sure where the idea originated from. There is more to consider like velocity, firing order and taking advantage of that through equal length headers.

From tuners I’ve spoke to specifically the owner of OTT tuning, they state the third gen Tacoma, with a V6 needs proper back pressure below 2000 RPM for optimal torque. A common trait aftermarket exhaust lack on the 3.5 engine. Reasons I can only assume, AWE does not provide power numbers below 2000 RPM for this specific reason. And judging by the way the tune is reacting to this exhaust, the engine note is amplified at this range (lugging) where it supposed to have optimal torque. I can only strongly speculate until I reflash my ECU with the stock tune. When stock there’s a slight chance it won’t lug as much down low and amplify this residence. The other variable is that I drive an access cab, which has less interior to baffle sound. AWE did tell me that the resonator is tuned for a double cabs.

I just assumed no drone equals no drone ever. 180 technology is not as magical as I thought.

I offered an appeal to authority. We'd all be better served by an explanation.
I'm guessing he means to say "scavenging". Back pressure is restriction in my mind. Scavenging helps "pull" the exhaust gases through the exhaust system via creation of vacuum. This is done by following the pulse of the cylinder exhausting gasses, then as it dissipates the system drops below atmospheric pressure as the valve closes and the next opens up, helping to pull the next pulse out of the cylinder.

Hey, thanks for digging up one of our old sales posts.

Concerning the drone comments, the AWE exhaust system is certainly louder than some would prefer. For those that aren't used to listening to this, additional volume at a certain RPM can more times than not be mistaken for drone. But that is in part how AWE designed to system, to be louder so the system itself is more noticeable than the OEM setup at cruising speeds. Additional volume however, is certainly not drone. The video clip below put out by AWE simulates highway driving and the loudest sound heard is the tire and wind noise. Reference around 1:19 in the video.

AWE conducts all of their dyno testing beginning at 2k RPM since they utilize a loaded dyno. Trying to obtain data below 2k is not possible when testing a vehicle in a 1:1 ratio. Full load below 2k RPM has been found to bog down the motor causing erratic results.

AWE also notes that their exhaust system needs an approximate 1,000 mile break in period. This time allows for the center resonator's internals to essentially fluff up and get the rest of the system lined in soot. Once broken in, the system will exhibit a more refinded exhaust note.

Our customer feedback on this exhaust setup has been nothing but positive. Of course we can't speak for all users out there and certainly there are those who will not like the exhaust. Being the great company that AWE is, AWE offers a 30 day sound guarantee. You can simply submit a request for return approval to AWE directly and they work with the firm you purchased it from to take it back. Having run AWE exhausts on a number of our shop trucks over the years, we have had nothing but good results and great sound.

Again I am getting similar responses across different forms of media. Non of them include anecdotal reports from access cab Tacomas using this system or OTT tuned Tacomas. Both of these important details are what matters in the contexts of my response. I bought my exhaust second hand from someone who states there kids could not stand the exhaust when he was pulling his small trailer. This is probably due to inadequate power below 2k rpm when downshifting on the highway or gradual acceleration. The engine is simply under more load for longer and causes the exhaust to get very loud at low rpm’s. The video AWE provides and frankly any form of video is a poor representation of the actual sound. Real world is real sound. I have over 1k miles on my exhaust and it still has a peak resonance at 2k, very strong when downshifting on the highway.

To reiterate, I drive a Tacoma access cab with an OTT tune. If anyone has information on other Tacomas with these specifications running this exhaust please let me know otherwise I will just resell it soon.
