The rain and soggy trails have kept me tinkering around on the bike and I found all the drive side bearings in my rear hub body and free hub were bad after I took it apart chasing some creaking noises out the back. Getting the spokes retensioned as well so hopefully Ill be back to regular riding by this next weekend and wont have any issues this spring/summer.

Decided to try some Teravails. Definitely heavy and seem a little narrow, but hopefully they perform well. Now for a desert trip.

Kiddo’s growing fast and loves to “help” dad maintain bikes.
Plenty of “what’s this?” and “I’ll do it” while trying to poke his eye out and drink or eat fluids and nuts/bolts. Might take three times longer, but fun as hell to share this with him.

Hell yeah! I gladly have my kids around when I'm wrenching on anything and will answer all the silly questions they come up with. I've had my older one help holding handbars while I swap headset bearings or help fish lines through frames while I grab the other end with a pick. Great to have another set of hands and hopefully they start to appreciate working on their own bikes / vehicles someday.

Hey gents, anyone here a local in Sedona? Or would be in the area around April 5th-11th to maybe guide a buddy of mine who will be there? :)

    Ouch!!
Yeah, he loves spinning the wheel and stopping it. Tried once to stop it with the brake rotor, then the spokes.
He knows the “only daddy touch this” parts. But will take every opportunity to find something else he shouldn’t touch.
Raising kids at this age in an exercise in constantly trying to keep them from hurting themselves.

Side question to anyone that’s used the shotgun seat. Have you noticed the bikes handling feel really weird? Wondering if I did something wrong. Had to switch out the upper headset cap and stem to get the collar on. That deleted the Acros “knock block”. Bike handles really weird. Like suuuuper tippy and floppy.

Sounds about right with today's slacker head tube angles. The tipy is because you raised up your center of gravity. I never ran your style of seat, but I had one of the seats that puts the kid behind you for a while when my kids were younger. It was also very tipy, took some getting used to, especially that mount / dismount.

Yea spinning the rear wheel and poking his finger in the rotor is what got my guy. Even at a slow revolution those edges will muck up a kids soft finger.

Yes, I had the same tippy handling with mine. With the front end being under load constantly you really have to rear weight bias more than you’d naturally do. Mellow greens are no problem, but I found the more we increased the speed and leans the more I had to be on my P/Qs.

Kinda seems obvious, but at the same time it wasn’t.

Sounds bike specific. I have the OG, frame mounted shotgun on my non slacked-out Hardtail, with little effect.

I ran some Teravails on my hardtail for a while. They were good hardpack/commuter/gravel hybrids but they definitely feel low volume for their size. I don't think I'd run them on a dedicated trail bike.

Definitely be careful about all the spinney parts (as @backcountryj mentioned). My daughter got her finger caught between the chain and chain ring! That was real awkward to get out cause she kept trying to spin it forward, which got her finger even more caught. Sounds like you're already on the right path with the "daddy only touch this" stuff.

It definitely makes a big difference with your kid on there, but I never noticed anything without (if that's what you mean). I only ever found that it was just awkward to pedal and I had to splay my knees out a bit.

I'm a little worried about that after mounting them up, but I'll give them a shot. :notsure:

I do like trying different tires, but it might end up with a Dissector/DHF or something else familiar.

Heres my 1990 Raleigh Technium Grand Prix that I put together a couple years ago. Mostly original with a few upgrades like Gatorskin 700x25, threadless stem adapter and carbon bars, selle anatomica saddle and a few other things. Thing is in mint condition but I have been considering doing a modern drivetrain upgrade. Either a 2x10 or 2x11, carbon wheels, etc

    Looks fun.

I've had a thing for mid-80s to early 90s road bikes for a while now.

One of my favorites I had set up with a 10 speed cassette and a friction downtube shifter. Just did the modern RD, crank, and FD, but left the downtube shifters and old brake levers. You could shift 10 gears in like half a second with that thing. lol

Thats awesome! This is one of the newer bikes I built. For the longest time I was building a lot of cruisers and city bikes from the 50s-70s. Especially a lot of early 70s Schwinns. I got rid of most of them now though and only have a 1971 Schwinn Racer that I found in the trash. The frame is bare metal and clear coated, nexus 3 speed 26x1 3/8 steel wheels, sealed bottom bracket, origin 8 cranks, and Brooks saddle, grips and saddle bag. I still build a lot of custom bikes for friends but havnt built one for myself for a while.

Hmm.. Going to dismount it and see how the bike feels without the seat attached. The input at the handlebars feels really weird, like they're fighting me. Almost like an anti-gyroscopic effect.

Yeah, I ran the Kessel for a bit. It's like a DHF pattern. Casing was tough as hell, compound was good. Braking was solid, but corner grip was quite lacking. I threw it on the back of the ebike, works well there since I don't mind some drift in the turns. Tough enough to handle the abuse. Heavy.
It's a 2.6 and has the appropriate volume for its size.
    Not going to purchase again.

Happy Thursday everyone. I've been MIA a little with holidays and kiddos, but checking in.
I've signed up for my first xcrace in 15 years, so getting into training mode.
In doing so I've decided I gave all the parts I need to build a light xc/trail speed toy. @backcountryj the wheels are the foundation.
Anyone riding an Ibis? Do the frames run small/ large, or fairly true to specs?
If that didn't give it away, the DV9 is going to be the frame.
