Seems odd that OP has not mentioned a contract.
I've never met a builder, ect. that did not attempt to protect himself from: 'Customer Ignorance'.

 

I don't know..... We have $30k so far into fixing up our 73 Blazer and all that was written up was a work order and what it will cost. A lot of it is word of mouth and trust in who is doing the work. Maybe OP should have spent more time researching. Either way, he's out money, contract or not. It's a tough and expensive lesson learned.
