I make my own form-a-funnel, using cardboard. I cut mine to approx 6" x 10", loosen the filter slightly then stuff the short edge up between the filter and the engine block, then loosen the filter some more and let it drain onto the cardboard. The width will fit between the two crossmembers just below the filter. Works great.

easiest way is a clear plastic cup, perferably a medium. loosen filter enough so your hand is able to twist it, no oil should be pouring out yet just get it loose. using a sharp but strong enough poker, poke hole in lowest point of the filter while holding the cup under the filter. wait til oil drains into cup, once its a drip hug the filter with the cup and twist it off using the cup. zero mess, not even a drop anywhere. all other ways explained here are obsolete and idiotic. costed me maybe a couple cents for the cup and have used it for multiple oil changes up to 160k miles so far with the same cup. reading some of the posts here is complete cringe, cardboard funnel..really? o_O

How do you poke a hole in the bottom of the filter and still get all of the oil in the cup? Won't the oil start pouring straight down out of the filter once you poke the hole? Sounds messy. Sorry if I'm missing something.

The oil will start pouring out as soon as the nail (or screw, or punch) is removed from the oil filter. This allows time to place a receptacle under the filter to catch the oil before you pull the nail. Well, maybe a screw isn't the best thing to use, but you get my point.

Not a toyota, but my chevy has a small drain rail from the area under where the filter screws onto the block along the pan to about 2-3 inches short of the drain plug. Most of the oil from my filter runs down it into the drain pan. It's a 20 plus year old engine (S10, 2.2l non ecotec) I would imagine is available in most scrap yards or pull a parts. I would think this little rail could be adapted to your engine or at least used for a pattern to fab your own.

I honestly never thought of it as anything because I've always had it.

I use a plastic cup that fits over it. I crack it loose first and then unscrew by hand with the plastic cup in place.

This. Hold the cup an inch or two below the filter and reach above it to spin the filter off allowing it to fall into the cup. I have small hands but it’s still not a problem. If you allow plenty of drainage time the filter mount won’t even drip and you’ll get more of the old oil out.
