So I had the factory set of Toyo’s a31 from the factory . All 4 tires were wearing on the outside and looked new on the inside. I got an alignment and it did not fix the issue. So I was in the market for a new set of tires, and it came down to Continental highway tire and the Michelin defender LTX. Between the two they continentals were a little bit cheaper so I decided to try those out and see how I like them and decided to save myself some money. I got the new tires put two weeks ago. And I had a balancing issue with the right front one I took them back last Monday they rebalanced all four tires but I drove it this past week and still had a balancing issue with vibrating and shaking at 4050 60 70 mph. So I decided to pay the difference and get the Michelin defenders LTX m/s . And Got the new tires put on took it out on the highway 50 60, 70, 80 mph there’s no vibration, no shaking and it’s smooth as butter on the highway and in the city. I do like the looks of the all-terrain tires on the tacos but for me 99% of what I do is on pavement all the time, so I’m glad I went with a high tire versus a heavier all-terrain tire. Both tires are high way tires but the Continentals at 35 lbs seemed way more heavier than the Michelin at 34lbs . My speedometer was off one to 3 miles when I had the continentals on the truck. I noticed driving on the interstate with the Michelin on the truck. The speedometer is back to normal like it has been since getting my truck new . So far it feels like I am riding on a cloud, and the tires feel more grippy on the road . I will follow up in a few thousand miles. IMG_4872.jpg IMG_4871.jpg IMG_4658.jpg

Seems to me that settling on your second choice for tires doesn't make sense. The balancing issue was the shop's and worker's incompetence, not the brand or type of tire. They should/could have calibrated your speedo also. I would never use that shop again.

A little of this and a little of that.
I've been a fan of Michelin tires for a long time. I've never been disappointed with ride, sound, wear, or grip with any of the Michelin tires I've ever had. Good choice!

Looking at your photos, there seems to be a lot of weight for new tires on 2 year old clean steel wheels. Just my opinion.

I wouldn't use that shop again.

Or could be the tire. Michelin ain't what it used to be.

I had a set of Coopers that wouldn't balance no matter the weight or position of the tire and this was from a good tire shop. Getting a bad or out of round tire is getting increasingly common.

    True. :(

I still use one of these:

    P1010001.jpg

It takes a bit of time & patience but with a true wheel will give good results.
Most people using these have never read the instructions and use them incorrectly. :annoyed:

Maybe but shop incompetence is often to blame. Most shops don't even know that manufacturers do a rough balance during manufacture and put a paint dot on the tire where the valve stem should be.

Ya they should have moved the tire on the rim and re-balanced. Way too much weight in 1 spot. Just lazy or incompetent.

Mine were feathering on the outer edge of both front tires. I now run 35psi and I think it is getting better. I have to run a few thousand more miles to be sure. When it is time, I will put the same tires as the OP is using.

Only aesthetic mods so far Leer 180 cap & Clazzio covers on order.
    Michelin for the Win!
Had 'em on my '06 TRD OR AC. Best tire for pavement and adequate in the woods. When my current OEM tires (currently at 30K) get retired I'll replace 'em with the Michelins.
Awfully quick to blame the worker, although not unreasonable with workers in today's society. While a sensible test would have been to at least break the bead, rotate the tire, reinflate & rebalance. Then road test. Problem with this from where I sit is it's time better spent NOT in the shop. I doubt OP will regret his choice.
Yup. Probably all on the front side too.
As did I in my gearhead days.
I always balanced with (4) equal weights, locating them in a equilateral triangle pattern pointing at the heavy spot. Then I'd mark the location of the weights and install (2) on the back side of the rim.
Then remount the wheel on the balance and position the remaining (2) weights. They seldom fell exactly in the same locations as those on the back, but fairly close.
Make sure the bubble is centered and tap them home.
This method distributes the weight more uniformly around the circumference. You can still center the bubble with (2) heavy weights on one side, but dynamically the wheel is still lop-sided and will cause vibration or a wobbling steering wheel.

I had the Continental all 4 tires balanced , twice and road force balance as well. Had the Michelin put on this evening and there’s no vibration no shaking no issues so far. So I don’t know if it was the tires or they had too much weight on the tires hard to say. The truck rides like normal when I had the factory tires on .

I have heard mixed reviews on those Michelin tires …on dry pavement they are great . But on wet they don’t do so well .one reason I stayed away from the Michelin tires …went with bfg trail terrains really love these tires .

You say "Awfully quick to blame the worker," then you say you would have done it differently.
I'm not quick to judge when there is obvious incompetence.
By the way I was in the tire biz and non of our shops or workers did things that way.

I'd wager most here have never even seen one of these or dismounted / mounted a tire.

    Just the way it is.

Those contis are good tires, as mentioned its just a dumb tire tech. It's hard to find ones that care shy of specialty shops.

I've never done a bubble balance, I'm no where near patient enough.
