For the past few months I have been looking into getting a 2nd gen Tacoma. From what I can tell, some of the better years are 2013-2015. I’ve also seen things that say both 2010 and 2005 are good years as well.

As of right now, I’m trying to find a Tacoma that is one of those years, 4wd, clean title, has a reasonable amount of previous owners, under 130k miles and under $20k. Is that realistic?

What else should I be looking for when trying to buy a used Tacoma?

Side note* if anyone is selling a Tacoma that meets these requirements, feel free to message!

    Thank you to everyone!

    welcome

05 is not a great year, first year of the 2nd gen. might have head gasket issues and motor mount issues (06 might also have these issues)
12 is the first year of having a secondary air injector in the exhaust, filter is known to fallabpart and f-up the works
any year could have frame rust issues depending on where it has lived

under 130k for under $20k might be doable be you will need to act fast and know when to walk away from a problem

77 square miles surrounded by reality.

Tires, Softopper, fully armored, winch, many pinstripes.
My 15 has 150k. I’d have to be very desperate to let it go for that much.
    You might get lucky though.

As the second gens get older it’ll get tougher to find one that’s in good shape with the mileage you’re looking for. 2015’s are 8-9 years old now. Also depends what trim you’re looking for, 4 cyl vs. 6 cyl, is it modded to hell or stock, single, access, or double cab, etc.

Might be worth playing around on cargurus or a similar site to see what dealers are trying to get for what you’re after. Private party sale will be different, but at least it’ll give you an idea of what the high end (dealer) of the price spectrum is.

I have been talking to a guy about a 2014 TX Baja edition with 116,000. Seems like a great guy. He said he would be willing to go to about 20k.

I live a state away from him but today we had a video call and he showed me everything on the truck, inside, outside, underneath, etc. He also started it and hit the gas so I could hear it. Everything looks really good. I’m thinking about pulling the trigger. No rust, no accidents, very few cosmetic issues. No lights on the dash, no funky sounds from the engine.

Any final tips or advice before buying it? Carfax looks fine, he’s done the oil changes himself so those aren’t reported.

Everything online says the Baja edition is pretty sweet and from what I can tell, I agree. Am I missing anything?

try this vin checker, Carfax can be less than compleat https://vincheck.info/
also make an account to check the Build spec https://www.toyota.com/ (I'm a little curious how those Port Distributor specials look against factory)

Not sure what part of the country you’re in but I wouldn’t give them a penny until you got under the truck with a flashlight and did a thorough inspection for rust. Black fluid film and black spray paint can hide a lot and make things look good for the camera. I’ve seen plenty of trucks posted online that say zero rust but you can also see overspray on the chassis from where they clearly covered something up. Not saying that’s the case here, but for 20 grand you shouldn’t be buying a rotted frame
