I have a 2006 Tacoma. I just recently installed new tweeters. I had to splice them with my original tweeters harness. When I increase the volume close to max it wants to crackle. Do I need to let them break in, higher amp, or crossover? The tweeters I got are kicker H631SFJ101
    - thanks

My 2014 OEM “tweeters” were really small full range speakers. They came with bass blockers to save them.

Do you think that could solve the problem? I was playing a decent bass song earlier and they were doing fine. It’s just when volume is increased more that 3/4 it wants to crackle. Even with no bass it still wants to crackle. I was reading online it said it could be a power issue, that my amp could be to weak. I have all stock besides the tweeters. Also read it could be due to a crossover so maybe the bass blockers could work. Before you added the bass blockers was it crackling for you?

It could be a lot of things. This happens with high volume, the amp may be distorting, the tweeter could be a victim not a cause. The tweeter may be distorting due to high volume. What tweeter did you get? Is it a quality piece or bargain basement.

Check for possible loose or partial connections at the tweeters and your splices. How did you splice? Crimp butt connectors are good, solder & heat shrink better, twist & tape will eventually fail, wire nuts aren’t designed to bounce around or vibrate and will eventually fail.

It is raining right now but afterwards I’ll take the door panels off and send a picture. I heat shrinked the wires. The new tweeters were soldered so I had clamp them and heat shrinked them into the old tweeters harness.

?? You heat shrinked the wires on? As in placed the wires on and covered it with heat shrink?

Yeah I crimped the wires then heat sinked to connect them.

The arrow is were I clamped the original wires of the new tweeter. I do not know that much about speakers but where the arrow is pointing is showing a battery. Is that for the crossover? Could that be the reason for the crackle?

    I don’t think that’s a battery. Probably a capacitor (blocking).

Ok, your connections look solid so my theory is out.

Yeah, not going to be a battery there. I was thinking capacitor too.

Is there a working system that you can connect the new tweeters. Testing that there is a tweeter issue not a system issue.

Assuming the “crackle” comes from both tweeters.

No I do not have anywhere to test the tweeters. And yes they come from both tweeters. I do not think the tweeters are the problem. Read online that they could not be getting enough power?

My brother keeps on telling me they need to break in, but I do not think that’s the case

While there is red and black on the tweeter side of the harness as pictured.... check the polarity on the main harness side where that plugs into. Stock they reversed the polarity going to the stock tweeters for more presense/soundstage.

Needless to say find a wiring diagram of the door speaker wire colors and match them up appropriately to your aftermarket tweeter. You can just pull the pins out of the grey plug and swap if necessary.

I just read another forum and the person did what you said nd4spdbh. He switched the wires from pink to purple to pink - pink and purple - purple. Is this what you are talking about?

He said in his forum that he could not hear music until he made this change. I can hear music but it wants to crackle when I increase volume.
