    Remember the Ford Pinto with the rear collision exploding gas tanks? Ford did the math and decided it was cheaper to pay off lawsuits than to redesign the vehicle.
    Remember #2- remember when GM changed to full synthetic engine oil and touted that owners could now go 10K miles between oil changes? Many came back on a hook and needed engines replaced. Yes, synthetic oil can last 10K miles, but the additives still break down long before that. Was GM duped by the synthetic oil companies? Were they told but wanted to sell vehicles that needed less maintenance? Who knows.
