And they need to continue to earn it. My father was a gun safety nut as well. But as he got older I started to find guns no longer locked up, and a loaded pistol under his pillow. It could be over-confidence, getting careless after decades of no issues, or just forgetfulness. Never assume someone who was safe will always be.

 

I live alone and don’t have friends with kids. If the gun isn’t locked in the safe or being transported somewhere (range, hunting, etc) it’s loaded and chambered. It’s a useless tool otherwise.

 

Yes, I understand the gun he had ready to go in bed, shouldn’t have mentioned it. It was the multiple unlocked guns and ammunition all over the house that was odd based on his past safety record. My entire point is people can sometimes get lax.
