I'm looking for responsiveness out of my truck. First off, it's paid off and stock with a 3.5 liter V6 with over 37K. Second, it's a slug going up hills and over passes to keep up with traffic. It constantly hunts just to give her a push. I drive a Ford Maverick for work and that one has an eco-Boost 4-cylinder AWD. It scoots when I give her the gun, but I wish my truck would do the same or better. Would it be better to invest in a $7k supercharger kit OR do an LS swap, complete with transmission? I hear they're easy installation but I don't want to spend a mint to do it either.

I have heard an ecu/transmission tune would help those drive better. The auto-trans has also sucked. Very much so in the newer 16+ Tacomas. An LS swap would be very cool, Motor mounts. Trans Crossmember, Cooling System, Just a small list of the major concerns to get it right

Can you do the work yourself or not? If not, a supercharger will likely be way cheaper.

I supercharged my 3rd gen and it was ok. Still not great but much better than stock. I’d start simple with a tune that addresses transmission shift logic and see if that is good enough before spending the big bucks.

Unless you’re doing all the labor yourself, replacing the engine is going to cost you too much money. You might as well sell the truck and buy a used raptor.

Supercharger is fine if you live in a state that doesn’t require anything resembling emissions.

My 2020 DCLB is fully tuned with an OTT tune from my local OTT Tuner on the medium/spicy setting (normal/ECT PWR) and I can honestly say it has turned my rig into a wholly different truck.
Night and day. No more throttle lag, no more gear hunting, no more having to push the throttle down 3/4 of the way just to make it "go". It also helped out the way the truck performs when on cruise control as well.
I believe they are also compatible with 2nd gens as well if I'm not mistaken.
In my neck of the woods, it was $400-something. Way cheaper than a supercharger or V8 swap.
I would suggest it to anyone who owns a Tacoma that is paid off an/or is not worried about a factory warranty.
