Garage Shop: Tools

This is my daughters jewelry box. They are made in China so don't let the Snap On tag fool you to think they are quality. I had to get some pink paint and touch these up. My dealer threw it in for free because these were cheaper to buy off the truck than on ebay. You can normally find these little boxes for less than $100 each on ebay though.

 

the previous 'pit' and snap-on boxes are the easiest to get.

after that, there's the typical home-goods sort of drawer-style containers. generally cheaply made, usually under many different brand names at every major retailer. i've got lowes search loaded already, so this is just lowes results, but i know menards and home depot, as well as Amazon will also carry similar variations.

Clearing out some old stuff, I know only one belongs in this thread but I'm lazy.
Used streamlight charger with magnetic mount added & new 2nd gen trailer brake controller harness.

Whoa. That SK setup is awesome, especially in a small garage. I have a fine collection of HF dollies stacked with camp gear bins, bike gear bins, one for my heavy Kuat hitch mount bike rack. The packout concept in the tool market is evolving nicely.

i almost wonder if the connectable tool storage concept is too saturated at this point...

imo, many of the models have a high chance of not existing in the next 2-ish years, which defeat the purpose of investing in them.

in order from most likely to invest:
milwaukee
toughbuilt
dewalt

and then there's everyone else. ridgid, kobalt, craftsman, klien, and sk, all have introduced products, but none have any sort of reliable information that they're invested in providing additional components, or maintaining the product line to be sure that the locking method will exist for any extended time frame. heck, rigid, kobalt, and craftsman have all changed locking systems in the last few years as well...

the sk, i don't even believe got a press release, it just showed up on Amazon one day and someone stumbled across it while searching tools. i do really like the sk in functionality and concept, i just have a hard time spending the same kind of cash on a system that might not even exist by christmas time this year, whereas i can put the same amount into milwaukee, and be all but guaranteed they'll still be offering the same products a year from now when my needs change and i need a different layout.

 

Tanos Systainers have been around for many years and when they make changes (improvements) they are still compatible with older designs.

 

That is very true. Planned obsolescence is reaching new heights. I need to become a card carrying member of the Right to Repair movement.

The interiors of these containers can also waste space in weird ways. Maybe that too is a part of getting consumers to buy more.

 

I think those inspired the concept originally. Spendy, but hey, I will buy tried and true (and supported over the long term) if It gives me sustained value over the long term. That goes for anything.

Sounds like it is all about money...

The SawStop is a good idea, but I have no plans to replace my Delta Unisaw.

Got this one at harbor freight. Can be configured as a standalone table or a table top unit like how I have it.

the weather was finally nice out, so naturally, i did the wrong half of the list of things to do outside.

changed the wheels on the toolbox for versions that roll instead of loosely drag.


drilled/tapped my normal hand truck to double-duty as a light duty trailer dolly, with a welded piece of scrap pipe and a $12 trailer ball. i'm tired of dragging the tongues around by hand.


built myself a hand truck welding cart, shamelessly copied from another member here, which took most of the day, but was a great chance to dial in the welder after converting from 0.030 flux core to 0.023 gas-shielded
