For those who didn't cheat, the shark attacks in these landlocked states happened in aquariums and such.

I dunno much about Rattlesnakes, but I've had a fair number of encounters with them.

Central PA is all ridges and valleys.
The mountains aren't as high as further south, and they're heavily forested.
That's where you find Timber Rattlers... deep in the forests.
If you spend much time in the woods in high summer, you'll run into them sooner or later.
Most likely when they're sunning themselves on a rocky ledge.

My experience is that Timber Rattlers here are kinda lazy and not at all aggressive.
They'll give you a warning rattle if you get too close and even then are reluctant to strike.
If you get bit, it's your own fault.
You ignored the warning and either stepped on one or tried to catch it.

    OTOH...

Then I lived in Florida for a couple years.
Eastern Diamondbacks are much livelier and bad tempered
If somehow you blunder within striking distance, watch out.

Same for "Canebrake" Rattlers in South Carolina, where I lived for almost 10 years.
(As it turns out, Canebrake Rattlers are just southern Timber Rattlers.)

    So what gives?

I'm inclined to think it's mostly about temperature.
It never gets really warm in the forests here until late July and August.
Even then, mornings are often damp and chilly in the woods.
