How does everyone here lock stuff in their bed? I’m looking to strap a full size spare in the bed along with my badlands jack but want it to be a real PITA to steal if someone wanted to. I know you can just run a cable lock to the d rings in the bed but is that really gonna stop theft? Why can’t they just take the d rings off with whatever the cable lock is its attached 2? I guess they would need to have the proper tools on them but I wouldn’t put it past some of them!

Locking tailgate and a locking bed cap or tonneau cover.

The other option is keep the spare tire under the bed and use the stock jack. You can fit a 33” tire under the bed with some minor persuasion and the stock jack works fine with a lift if you keep a couple bits of scrap lumber in the bed.

^ that's a little extreme, especially for some material goods worth a few hundred dollars

OP: your cable will work, yes. A locking tonneau would be best, then people can't see what you have back there either. Keeps the weather off too, if you're going to keep this stuff back there full time.

At some point you're balancing the convenience of someone stealing it with the inconvenience of you using it. Nothing is foolproof (especially with battery powered angle grinders these days), so something simple to stop crimes of opportunity is usually best.

I just use a cable lock and run it through everything that's in the bed, multiple d rings, one of the bed rail cleats plus whatever I'm securing. If someone really wants your stuff they'll get it, most thefts are based on ease/opportunity. If they can't be gone with your stuff in 3 minutes, they likely won't bother.

Also if you use a cable lock, make sure to attach your spare, jack and anything else on the same loop so they have to take it as one. Realistically who's going to be able to carry a full size spare tire plus a large jack and move at any kind of pace, especially when the tire won't roll

If you go that route, look at Bolt locks. They can be keyed to your ignition/door key. Makes things a bit simpler for you

It's not just a few hundred dollars. It's however much time you have to spend doing something you'd rather not in a place you'd rather not be in exchange for those dollars.

Theft of food to survive is excusable. The rest is not, and justifying it as "it's only stuff" doesn't help anyone.

The thief/robber decided their life is only worth a few hundred dollars worth of stuff and that's the gamble they are making every time they attempt to rob or steal from an honest person.

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
I guess it all comes down to where you live !!

Never had to lock anything but I do know if someone wants something bad enough it is impossible to keep it from being stolen.

They could just as easy steal the whole vehicle.

So you are ok with someone breaking into your home and grabbing some food?

You should probably read your state laws about using deadly force in Ohio. This is a decision you need to make before something happens and you end up behind bars for a while.

Cables really don't work. I used to think cables were pretty good until one off-roading trip a friend lost some keys. He cut through the thick cable with a leatherman in under 30 seconds.

I run a Retrax XR Pro on my truck, but also don't leave it out either. In reality I can manually lock the tailgate to protect against someone breaking some glass and opening all the doors (which opens the tailgate lock). Not sure you want to spend 1700+ to protect those items.

Nope. Still gonna shoot them. I'm just saying that theft of food (for survival) is the only theft that is understandable.

You should probably read the great state of Wyoming deadly force laws as well. I'm glad I did. Pretty cool that WY has laws that protect from civil lawsuits if the criminal is justified. Good to know.
