I've told the story before (which I won't repeat) about shooting two dogs running loose that got into the chicken coop.
The owner wanted to press charges and was astounded when law enforcement informed him that he was the one facing charges.
Property damage and failure to control his animals.

I've also shot feral tomcats who caused trouble with my cats... 2 would come in the cat door, eat food and mark the walls... bad idea.

    So yeah.

It's negligent owners who are the culprits.

My indoor/outdoor cats cause no one any trouble.
Funny how when they're fixed and well fed, they don't roam.

I wish there was some way to make negligent pet owners do the right thing.
Don't let your dogs run loose unsupervised.
Get your cats neutered and don't abandon them.

I have zero compunction about eliminating a threat.
Quickly and humanely is the only goal at that point.

I'm of two minds about that.

My own cats have killed the occasional bird and brought it into the house... despite being fixed and well fed.
They also kill mice, and far more often.
Before we got married, Mrs Gritto had quite a problem with rodents.

Yup, I caught one hunting birds in my front yard - that was the last straw.
The trap went out the next night.

Had a 2nd one that would pee on my deck - same result - renditioned to county.

If you eliminated the 69% of kills attributed to feral ones, the impact would be way less.

Like you said, well fed/cared for ones, do these things way less often and usually stay around their owner's homes/usually are fixed so they don't just reproduce in perpetuity.

I have no issue with barn cats for a similar reason - they are performing a needed function; rodents bring the plague.
Okay I'm being melodramatic, but you see where I'm going with that.

My dog has gotten loose/away a few times and I have been right behind him yelling "WTF do you think you're doing, get your fucking ass back here!!!"

I'm sure it was quite a sight!

    Not melodramatic at all.
Reality doesn't care about one's feelings.

    Funny you mention barn cats.
I grew up on a farm.
It's how I came to like cats.
Some were quite friendly, despite being basically feral.

The barn cats were given bone meal and milk tank rinsing, that's it.
They were very efficient hunters, and farms attract loads of rodents.
A good proportion couldn't survive that way, and their lives were short, mostly.
Sounds cold, but it's a fact.
