Again.. Im not an electrician :anonymous: but It is most definitely 3 phase. It wouldn't run with out it. The receptacle was installed by an certified electrician, Red, Black, White, Green. The 85amp plasma and The 3 phase SuperShear Decanner I make all run off the same plug. 3 phase 5 horse power motor also wouldn't run off single phase.. Unless it was a 1 phase motor which we also run but only on the single phase outlet (3 wires black, white, green, 220V)
the plug pictured I believe can be wired without the fourth wire installed, therefore leaving the stud out, all depends on the outlet on the wall and current provided.

Just my 2 cents and not trying to argue

i dunno man, not arguing here either. i was tought that 3 phase receptacles will have one spade at 90* to the other 2, so maybe the sparky just used a single phase plug? or maybe it doesnt matter, just the way i was taught.

as far as 3 vs 4 wires, yeah, 3 wire is called Delta if i remember correctly and i have never worked with that, my somewhat limited 3 phase exp has always been 4 wire, called Wye.

Looking into this so I dont get egg on my face for the wrong info.. Yes this machine can be ran Single Phase, but requires an 80amp breaker. We have it wired 3 phase on a 60amp breaker. It can Also be wired 440 on a 25amp breaker. So Technically we are both Correct, but why run it on a 80amp single phase if you have 3 phase available. Plugs and receptacles come in many different applications. This is the one we chose as it matches the other 3 Phase machines we run. I could cut it off and let the next guy wire whatever plug he wants to, but he will have out figure out his own wiring configuration.

I could become adept at this, but the most I recall clearly about 3-phase from college electical circuits is a joke (or anecdote) about a guy emerging from an exploded shed saying "I guess A and B were really swapped on the 3-phase.".

Late response due to IT issues:

In short, a 3-phase machine will not work on a single-phase panel without a lot of money. It requires a phase converter. All residential panels are single-phase. Power companies really don't like bringing in a 3-phase drop to neighborhoods in my experience. That too is expensive. Not all commercial buildings run 3-phase either. I'd say that most older commercial areas are still wired single-phase.

In short, unless you know for certain you have 3-phase power, don't bother. It will be marked as 3p-4w and 208VAC, not 220VAC or 240VAC. There is a lot of small nuance within 3-phase that doesn't really need to be brought up here, and most small machines don't require it and everything involved is more expensive.

*Reporting from the utility side of things*

3 phase boils down to how much a customer wants to invest in the project. If there's 3 phase primary (actual high voltage 3,000-12,000ish volts) running by your shop then it'll be the cost of adding a new transformer bank (3 transformers in a cluster on the same pole) or a new kiosk (big brown/tan or green box for underground applications). The cost for new service wire to the building, a new meter base, and the labor for the utility to do all the work on their end. In other words unaccessible for the common home gamer shop/pole barn.

There are scenarios where the infrastructure is already present within a few poles (your neighbor has an existing 3 phase) and all it would take is running a couple hundred feet of service wire.

If you don't have 3 phase primary in the area, good luck. Whole other barrel of monkeys. That's where a phase converter comes into play which in my experience is only good for a small 3 phase motor (residential elevator, 3 phase compressor, etc).

Wild fact. Up on the Rez at Keyenta and all that area. Single phase. With my old company and we upgraded that Chevron at the Goulding Lodge and area. It was a PITA to get them to install the right equipment to have at two phases to make stuff work. The owner of the site wanted it done. But had to go through the tribe.
